Resolved 1.5.4 Herd penalty is ridiculous

No, I didn't use any mods.
Summary: I don't know if it's just me or if you all actually tweeked the herd penalty for 1.5.4, but it's ridiculous in my opinion. Either that or looter parties are suddenly got faster. Something is wrong with travel speed in 1.5.4. I started a new campaign in 1.5.4 and built my party up similar as I have in previous versions and the fastest I'm able to travel is 4.2... some of the time. Right now I have a 20 man party with 36 old work horses, 4 mules, 37 horses (multiple varieties) and my load right now is 5822/6695. With this small party and still within my cargo capacity, I can only go 2.83. It is day time and I'm not disorganized. This makes 1.5.4 unplayable in my opinion. I can't play this game if I'm constantly the slowest dude on the map. And barely am carrying anything with me.
How to Reproduce: Save game is at the upload site. Just open it and wander around the map a little. Sell some work horses, drop some gear, add some horses and gear and see how it's affecting speed. Travel speed in the campaign options is set to "easy" which is what I always have it at. It is a significant drop in travel speed compared to previous versions.

It was in the 1.5.4 patch notes that the minimum penalty was going up.

I believe the optimal horse/pack animal size is 2 per party member. So with 20 guys in your party your total horses/mules/camels shouldn't go over 40.

So there's a problem if i have over 300 with just 100 horsemen i quess.
I have a herd penalty of 3.83 and i go at 2.7 speeds, AND i'm at war with 3 neighbouring factions
That sucks..

I've been informed that this change is intended and not a bug. The herd penalty is changed from 0.02 to 0.2.
MArdA, in that case would you please let the devs know that it now renders the game unplayable. And here's the reason.

From the moment you start your game, you can gain renown by fighting looters or doing tournaments. You can build up your denars by conducting trade. Prior to 1.5.4 I could do both simultaneously. I could fight looters and earn renown and I could carry around trade goods and be a merchant... basically a fighting merchant. As of 1.5.4 I now have to choose if I want to focus on building renown and being broke, or earning denars and slowly building renown when I can find a tournament.

If I choose to be a merchant, I can no longer catch looter parties which also means I cannot complete the "needs help with bandits" quests in the villages. I can't keep up with a caravan in order to complete the "escort caravan" or "caravan ambush" quests. They have basically erased half the game for me. I enjoy the escort caravan and caravan ambush quests. I also enjoy the trading aspect. Now I can't do both.

I assume there's some reason they did this other than they just felt like it. Can one of the devs provide an explanation as to their logic for this herd penalty. I just don't get it. Imagine you're walking down the street to your favorite coffee shop. It takes you one minute to get there from work or your house. Now imagine some stranger runs up to you and ties cinder blocks to your feet. That's what this herd penalty is. Please ask the devs… implore the devs…. to add that "0" back in front of the 2 on the right side of the decimal.

If you hire a bunch of tier 1 troops with low upkeep you can still use more animals.

Andrei, you can always sell excess horses and sell loot at cities more often, that should get rid of the herd penalty.

At 100 troops you can have up to 200 animals. And by simply not upgrading your tier 1 troops you keep your upkeep somewhat low.

Also, don't camels have the option to get saddles with "heavy load" or "heavy load saddles" ? (I know I saw them looking through the item database in the game. Not sure if they're actually implemented in game.)

Perhaps adding pack-saddles to the game could help alleviate the problem to an extent by increasing load per animal? (assuming they're not already implemented in game)

I know riding horses already only give 20 additional weight capacity, while pack animals give 100 per animal iirc.

Also, I'm not sure how the maximum number of animals works in relation to mounted troops. If you have 50 horse archers who have their own horses, can you still bring 100 additional horses/mules/camels, or only 50 more as the horse archers are already mounted?

I'll have to do some testing on this, now I'm curious.

Thanks for the advice really
Thing is since before this update i used to buy every horse in a city by habit, y'now...just having 50k weight capacity was cool and all but this update sets it more realistic in some way so i don't have to herd pack animals 4 times the number of soldiers:smile:

I dunno I think its fine, before there basically wasn't a herd penalty at all which was a bit ridiculous.

Forwarded your input. Thanks!
It's the 21st century and we've ushered in a new era where you support an argument you know is wrong because humans are stubborn. This also leads to voting for politicians you know suck, but they're your guy so you don't admit they suck. I'm breaking from tradition. Went back into 1.5.4 and started another play through very begrudgingly. I WAS WRONG about the herd penalty being so bad and making the game unplayable. I'm eating a huge bowl of crow served up by several folks over in another thread. I'll have to go into that thread and admit I WAS WRONG there too. I started another campaign in 1.5.4 and although I now have to pay more attention to the number of animals I bring into my party, I've found it is balanced just fine. I still believe it is slightly too high. But it's not unmanageable.

exactly, the penalty is not bad at all, it is pretty reasonable, just feel Aserai and more importantly trader perks should help mitigate it not put in a 175 riding perk that traders never get too

Hello there

Have started a new game on 1.5.7 after 1.4.3 and totally dissapointed.
Do you guys know Mongols had 3 horses during a campaign? Genghis Khan demanded to have 5 horses for each warrior and their movement speed was fantastic for those years. They didn't know what is herd penalty is :smile:

Thanks for the advice really
