Ancient Phalanxes (a working title) is a Muliplayer Mod for Warband with the humble ambition to encourage teamwork in Multiplayer Battles. This project aims to bring the world and warfare from the Archaic and Classical Age, where men once stood shoulder at shoulder in the legendary Phalanx, to the great Warband Multiplayer.
Q&A about this project
Who is working on this project ?
A small team calling themselves "Naked Fanatics", bringing Modeling, Skinning and Scripting Skills from various other games.
Where did you get the idea ?
While playing the Invasion(tBfC) mod for Warband with some friends, we employed a Phalanx to fight off the Later Waves of the mod. During this fight we saw how effective and how much fun it was. Sadly, in Warband MP, such Walls or Formation barely find any friends and with the great emphasis on Riding and Archery not a lot of people have the patience to stay in a shieldwall and roll over the enemy.
What factions will be in the game ?
For a start there will be Sparta and Athens. Both will field the same setup of troops. Those will be Hoplites (Heavy Infantry), Peltasts (Light Infantry),Psiloi (Skirmishers) and a possible (not final) Special Unit (Spartan Hippeis, Athenian Marine)
However, considering the timeframe there are factions that might come into later releases, depending on the success of this mod. These include Corinth, Thebes, Macedon, Illyria, Syracuse, Croton, Thrace and so on. That of course means those will have other troop line-ups, possibly including forms of Cavalry and other Heavy Infantry.
Will the mod be historical ?
I will be to a certain degree. It will be historical in every aspect that doesnt contradict our basic idea and the balance of the mod.
What is the goal ?
It's simple. Two Phalanxes consisting of Hoplites clashing on a Multiplayer map in Classical Style, supported by Skirmishers and Light Infantry.
Wait, no Archers and Cavalry ?
Cavalry won't be in the early releases, since warfare of that timeframe doesn't cover mounted combat for the factions we have in mind for the first release. This is especially good since Cavalry, while being great fun in native mp, would be a huge setback for our goal. Most of you should realize that.
As for Archery, it will be limited and expensive. Bows are not a common weapon of that timeframe, nor do we plan on large masses of Archers. However, Bows will be in the game for a relativley high price. Ranged combat however will be included fully, with throwing stones, javelins and slingers.
When will be the first Release ?
Not sure. We'll try our best to release a first beta very early.
Do you need help ?
Yes and No. We'll try to get as much done as possible on our own for the first release, but experienced Modders are welcome to help us achieve our goal, especially since we have almost no experience in modding M&B or Warband. Mentors so to say...
Modellers and Skinners are always welcome...the more work gets done the faster this will be playable...especially Skinners...
