Hi there, allot of threads asking for help with custom troops are cluttering up the board so i thought I would attempt make a clear step by step guide for those not in the know. Correct me on any mistakes and ill edit.
1. Download The Unofficial Troop Editor: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,34154.0.html
2. Open the troops.txt file in the Custom Settlements module folder which probably is: C:\Program Files\Mount&Blade\Modules\Custom Settlements. With a text editor like Notepad or Word pad.
3. Click Edit > Find, Find 'Custom' in note/word pad.
4. COPY:
trp_custom_recruit Nothing Nothings 2097152 0 0 1 0 0

Now scroll down to the very bottom of the troops.txt file and paste both of these under the existing troops. For each extra custom male troop you wish to create post ''trp_custom_recruit -ect-'' at the bottom again. Each extra female custom troop re paste, ''trp_f_custom_recruit -ect-'' The F is for female heh.
5. Open 'TroopEditor.exe' From step 1. Click browse... near the top right corner and open the 'Custom Settlements' folder in the Mount & Blade Modules folder. Probably: C:\Program Files\Mount&Blade\Modules\Custom Settlements
6. Top left corner, File name: Troops.txt
7. Scroll down the Troops List on the left until you find: 'Nothing' and 'Nothin' (numbers 754 and 755 in version 0.66 of Custom Settlements) These are your base custom troops before editing, the guys you first hire, Nothin is the female.
When you rename the troops leave these first two base troops -Troop ID- named as ''trp_custom_recruit'' and ''trp_f_custom_recruit'', this is VERY important
---> All other troops after these can have any Troop ID starting with ''trp_custom_''
8. Somethings to remember while using the editor, ---UPDATE AND SAVE ALL THE TIME!(top right corner)--- If you make changes to a troop and change troop selection the changes you made will be lost, update and save like its a bad habit.
9. After editing the two troops from step 7, You can then scroll down to the bottom of the list where you will find the other troops you made in step 4. Make sure all the upgrade paths lead to the right troops. So 'supa cool tropper 1' upgrades to 'megga killa troopa elite 2' etc. Making sure the female troops lead to other female troops unless you want sum funky upgrades man.
-->The 'Flags' boxes when ticked, force the troops to always equip the weapon armour you have selected in the items box. If this is not ticked they randomly might not have any boots, for instance.
*You may have to make sure they have the Attributes required for some weapons. Str 8 for some mail items for instance.
-->In Troops ID do not change ''trp_custom_'' but you can change the word after the second space. 'Single' and 'Multiple' versions of your troops names can be anything you want. Except for the first two base troops who's Troop ID -MUST- be ''trp_custom_recruit'' and ''trp_f_custom_recruit''.
*Change 'Faction' to '13 player faction' may be a good idea. (Anyone know anything about this one, I'm not to sure if it effects anything?)
--> If you need some troops inspiration for stats and items maybe check the default troops to compare with yours. (Rhodok/Swadian etc...)
*Be sure to put several different items in the inventory, otherwise all your troops will look like they are from Clone Wars.
Use cheat mode with your settlement/ faction custom, to test the troops out. (Camp, Take a walk around the camp site. Very useful here)
Also thanks to the people that gave advice and helped me learn all this, it can be confusing at first.
Enjoy.
