Thanks to a partnership with a new server co-owner, we have been able to restart Pirate_Battle_1 under original settings and all the classic maps, along with many of the new ones.

Alright guys, so everything's been finalized and confirmed.

I regret to inform you all that, after several years serving the Napoleonic Wars community, Pirate_Battle_1 will be shutting down due to a lack of continued funding and stable interest until further notice. It's been so long since I first named the server and brought out a single map (it was the one on open water with three old viking ships facing each other and wreckage in between, the cannons galore one, all of the old timers will remember).

We watched the server grow from that into one of the most popular servers in the entire game, consistently being full at 200 pirates all killing each other on some of our largest maps. The Bloody Sunday event saw these same huge number crammed onto tiny little maps...now that was bloody. But now its time to say goodbye. Cheesy, I know...

I know some of you may be shocked but allow me to continue.

It's been an amazing run with all of you! I'd like to thank Penn for his immense contribution to funding and running the server during the second half of its operation. Special thanks also goes to Artaxias, our awesome but slow mapmaker and Hakunamatata, undoubtedly the most active of the last generation, so to speak, of admins. Thanks to all of the other admins who put up with my constant checking up on them and forcing them to read admin manuals. And of course, thanks to players who made the server come alive for who knows how many hours.

With that being said, I also have to include the following (might as well end on a positive note). Should future interest arrive in the revival of Pirate_Battle_1, potential "investors" should know that I have all of our classic maps backed up on my computers and also have access to 90% of the newer generation maps. Our two forums, Steam groups, website, YouTube page, and all other related server infrastructure will remain up but not active. Should the need arise, these are available and will continue to be available indefinitely. Essentially, we will be open to partnering with other server hosts to contribute these maps and infrastructure should they want to take over Pirate_Battle_1.

I would recommend that maps that are smaller use the code that only enables sailors (perhaps occasionally allow muskets) and larger ones allow people the choice to pick a class with muskets. I can design more maps with pirate-only action in mind, but right now there are several maps that just aren't as well suited to it (mostly the large ones).

I understand, we'd love to have the maps anyways because they definitely will be used either way and may even sway the discussion to one side or the other.

With some generalisation I can say that the older players (not in age, but in time spent on M&B) want the old server back and the newest players want to keep the all pirates. And about the poll, I said to many people on the server to go voting (in favour or against) cause we need their opinions. But so far only 12 people voted yet... I know this may sound a bit harsh, but I think that people only vote if they care about the server. And as it looks now, the most players who voted want to change it back.
Can we conclude by this that the payers who like the all pirate thing don't care about the server? Probably not, but they don't take the effort to go voting... Then I wonder which players we want to have on the server. Just something to think about.

Anyways, I know Penn and Eagle are thinking a lot about this issue. So I'll just keep convincing people to vote so that we can know the opinion of the majority of our players.

Wow, there was a lot of great insight in there! The vote definitely is indicative of the views of the players who cared enough to come and vote. Thank you so much for pushing more of them to do so. I agree with your ideas about switching from one to the other, but I think it may be beyond the encoding capabilities of the server.

If we can't pick one or the other, it will have to be a matter of voting to change nations, which shouldn't be that hard if people really want to play with all classes (they could just keep the map the same if they really like it).

Based on the drop in number on the server however, I am one of those pushing for a return to the old pirate battle with all inclusive classes. Still love the update, but you gotta give the people what they want! I think if we hit 20 people, its enough to assume a wide enough sample size, extrapolate that data, and call the poll conclusive.

I would like to formally propose a reset of the server to its normal functions. Ever since the change to pirate only, the server has utterly died. Its maximum population has reached around 8-10. That is nothing compared to its former 20-30 a day. After CoffeeBean and I asked the few  players that were on if they liked this or wanted the old way, they unanimously agreed to go back to the old way. Hundreds of players loved the Pirate Battle server and it quickly became a community favorite. I highly appreciate the time it must have taken to program and script the server to what it is now, but what is the point if no one plays. It breaks my heart to see such a lively community of friends and co-players so quickly dissipate. What joy was had and memories made when a riflemen could end the round from far away, when two captains were going at it, when a cannoneer made one shot that ended the round before it started, when a player's bayonet could weave in and out of two foes at once, when everyone would laugh and joke as they let their imaginations roar, coming up with all sorts of crazy scenarios that involved Austrian Line Infantry defending their island from foreign marines. These memories have since faded as people move on to other servers, let us revive the glory of Pirate_Battle_1! How amazing it would be during the summer, to see the server overflowing with players every day! Pirate_Battle_1 should be THE server, the one that everyone knows they can go to for a fun time that can pass the time quickly, where they can laugh and smile as they join their comrades on a quest to conquer the sea.

I might start making maps again, although it seems as if I'm a seasonal player now being as I only seem to be active in the summer. It seems to me while I was gone that there is now a way to implement "plugins" of a sort into the game where players can be restricted of certain things etc.

Might I suggest Penn, as a compromise (and if possible), that each map alternates between being naval and pirate. While the server name does imply piratey action, many people enjoy the naval aspect. Perhaps a 50/50 ratio or something of the likes may suffice both sides, adding more variety as well.

I also see my mapping corner is still up, might as well send in an update for that if it's staying there

Thank you for the feedback. While we deal with this, I'd like to remind you that we have that option available right now. All you have to do is poll for a nations change to Prussia and Russia to have access to regular units. Or just ask the admins on to help you out.

UPDATE ON ADMIN RECRUITMENT, THE SERVER, AND OTHER FUN TINGS

First of all, this thread is active. I use it to recruit the majority of our new admins.

Secondly, there have been a lot of changes to the server and the server operation recently. A few new maps have been made and more are on the way. Most significantly, we have become the first server to alter the script coding of the game for our server such that we can now do fancy things like server welcome messages, fun comments, and controlling the spawning/camping of players to improve gameplay dramatically.

These updates are for you guys, so we need your feedback on them! Post here what you think about them! Nothing is permanent! We will customize our server for you so get talking!

ADMIN UPDATES

The recent server updating has resulted in a backlog of applications. I have selected 4 applicants dating back from March all the way to today and contacted them in regards to our new openings. That being said, we have more spots so keep those good applications coming! I'm looking for at least 3 more successful candidates, so there are three more spots.

All in all, a lot of exciting things are happening. We have cool new server updates and are still looking for admins. Both of our threads are in active use as well as our website so the doors of communication are wide open.

I have personally encountered 150-200 unpleasent episodes on this server, people have pushed others of boats, much misbeheavior by people in chat, blocking exits, and people who stay fay away from opposite team/run away when they are the last guy on purpose and delay the round, and glitchers who camp at "unallowed" places. I follow and respect admins rules like i always did. I wanna contribute on this server's future, and make sure rules are followed by the players, and to keep trolls out from ruining for other players.
Hakunamatata suggested me to apply for admin.

Recently there are some new trolls coming at the pirate battle server on napoleonic wars: pushing people off the tiny boats, blocking exits, blowing the ships of their team up, artytrolling, hiding somewhere so that the round ends with a draw... It annoys me that they no one can stop them when there is no admin on. I'm not interested in using the admin powers to tell people what to when i don't like their tactics, changing settings, or kicking people of the server. I just want to slay the trolls (after a warning or two) who ruin the game for everybody.

Stain, obviously you care a great deal about the server as you have taken the time to create an expansive report. We appreciate this effort. Now, reading through some of those things, I believe many of them are either misunderstandings or at most, you got some of our admins at the wrong time when things were busy or they were not capable of giving you 100% of their attention and dealing with the issue more effectively.

For example, slaying you when you fall in an inescapable gap is standard procedure if an admin is no on your team and should therefore not teleport you right to where he and the enemies are. That could have been a simple misunderstanding.

Penn cares a great deal about the server and all its players as do I, we can assure you of that. Sometimes, after dealing with so many trolls who try to ruin the server, we act out more harshly than we should - but we do it in the honest hope of improving the server.

Perhaps the best course of action is to start afresh, stop trying to provoke admins or pushing the limits of sometimes unclear rules. Trust the admin's judgement. I encourage you to make reports on players who genuinely break the rules whenever you like or about whatever you think is wrong and should be changed. Just be respectful and calm.

In the past, as you have admitted, you have broken the rules and not acted as you should have. You should have expected some punishment.

All of our admins are trained and tested on all the rules before they are actually even given the admin password. Hell, I issue a huge admin manual to the new guys briefing them on standard procedure and rules that they have to read over and are tested on!

Please remember that at the end of the day this is a private server, paid for by people right out of their own pockets, not yours. We try to please the majority of the community but obviously you can't please everyone 100% of the time. If an admin tells you a rule in game that you have not seen before, you have to assume that is is in fact a rule. Come to our forums, check the rules, and debate it after the incident, not during. Just because it is your first time hearing a rule such as "don't block the stairs" (which is in fact a rule) doesn't mean you can debate it and argue and refuse to obey it on the spot.

Anyways, we hope you can continue to enjoy Pirate Battle in the future!
