If you take a lords head during battle, does that mean he is dead? without having to execute him..

I paid a lord 50,000+ denars plus a bunch of stuff to join my kingdom. It seemed fair cause he owed a couple of towns, but then 3 or so days later he left my kingdom? Should that be normal, cause now I don't trust paying any lord for his service.
