Uhh...You know...those Puns...Are called jokes...they're funny to most people...and it is REALLY hard to get immersed into an 8-bit game...So no whacking at Kings Quest!
No harder than it takes to get immersed in a good book - if the story is good, and the gameplay is good, there should be no problem being immersed (if you have some semblence of creativity and imagination). Jokes and puns can be a boon if they are done in context - the majority of in-game jokes are not.
When I play an rpg, I do it for a mature and cohesive entertainment experience. I play an rpg because it has an excellent and compelling story, believable characters, intuitive game mechanics.
If I want quick entertainment I play a shooter. Mount and Blade is not a shooter - nor is it an rpg. What mount and blade does best is recreate a natural feeling combat environment - all this other stuff they are adding is clearly tacked on and it unmistakably feels that way. Since the realistically-bent combat module is the main focus of the game, that is what should be improved to its greatest potential.
The rest of the game just feels like an excuse to get to the next battle (which is always a lot of fun!)
