While nearly everyone in the South is racist they do not openly support slavery. In fact they are terrified of black people and hide from them. They would prefer never to see a black person. They Slavery would mean that they must interact with the black slaves. The reason they claim to support the South is two-part. First they have come to think of the South as politically Conservative (Like Bush, not the French meaning of Conservative) and as such they think the Confederacy was conservative. Waving around Confederate flags is a way for them to taunt and insult the other side of politics. They feel 'rebelous' in that they are showing that they refuse to participate in polite and mature debate. When a Liberal or Socialist person sees someone procaliming to support the Confederacy they know ahead of time not to try and persaude this person because they will be violent and abusive to the Liberal/Socialist. That is exactly the intent of the 'Supporter of the Confederacy'. They use it both as intimidation and as a way of shielding themselves from anything that might cause them to doubt their political opinions.
Personally, being both a Southerner and having lived in the south most of my life, I object and am offended by this statement. Perhaps in the area you lived things were like this, and there are many isolated areas where racism is rampant. However, the majority of the south IS NOT anything like what you've said. I've lived in Virginia, (currently) South Carolina and Alabama, as well as having spent considerable time in Texas, West Virginia, Gerogia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. I've also lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland, where I must say racism was much more prevalent and virulent.
Now, to the topic at hand: French and Indian War has my vote.
