That sounds pretty cool, but that would have to depend on how much the quest-giver trusts that you are capable enough.

Information based on rumors seems fine to me.
Certainty about the number of people you will be dealing with may be more unlikely.
It wouldn't be too unreasonable to let the quest-giver say which route the caravan might take, as they did in Warband.
