My book died.

I have already asked it at the Western Digital site, but still not gotten any response.

So, just in case someone have had the same problem and found a solution, i thought i might ask.

Yesterday my "My book Essential" suddenly turned off while connected when transferring a larger file.
I disconnected the power for a while, and when i put it back in it worked again. However, that happened again today and now it doesn't respond at all.

I have taken out the hard drive, turns out that there is this little chip that the power goes through before it reaches the hard drive.
I have tried connecting it alone to the power outlet, as the lamps that indicate that the device is on is on it.
Turns out it wont power at all and is probably the broken part.
I will try using the hard drive as an internal disc now, i will be right back with the result.

Update: Yup, works like a charm. It is even still recognized as the "My Book External Disc" even without the chip, so all my installed programs are still working.
The only problem is that, well, it is not exactly an external disc anymore, and it's my parent's.

What a coincidence, guess why i didn't want to send it in for repairs.

Damn, i hate whenever i have to open the computer, everything is such a tight fit that i have to pull out several parts before i can do anything.
I was lucky everything worked correctly at the first attempt now though.

So, buy another external enclosure to stick it in. They're pretty cheap. You should be able to find one for around or under $20.

I remember when I lost all my porn. I was stuck for three weeks using nothing but memories mammaries. Oh the memories mammaries.

Fixed.

I can't help you with your external hard-drive problem, unfortunately. I'm thinking of getting one, actually. How has that brand been, for reliability...

They are usually reliable. But when i saw how it works, i must say it would be better to buy a regular hard drive. And buy a separate external enclosure as Arch suggested.
It's cheaper, and the FAT32 format that they come in cant hold larger files.
