I agree completely. I just started playing rather recently and I've been scouring these threads ever since. Its good to see some activity and that people are still involved with this mod.

Be vassal and get as much land as you can.
Towns with villages are the best.

I had 3 towns and 3 castles when I rebelled.
Most were somewhat close to each other so defending was easy.

Also make sure you have a decent party size first.
+500 is enough but if your skilled you can have less.
