Cable modem w/ editable mac address?

Users who are viewing this thread

Yup, has to be a modem.

Our companies ISP mandates that we use their cable modem, however, after a certain amount of time it cuts off remote desktop connections. We know it's the modem, but the ISP won't allow us to use another modem that we know works correctly. So either we find another service provider (yeah right, go go gadget monopoly!) Or we find a modem with an editable MAC and swap it in using the old modems MAC, hopefully with the ISP being none the wiser.

Any piece of internal hardware and MAC Clone? Have you tried running through a router?

Apparently some versions of the venerable Motorola Surfboard have a vestigial console port that allows you in to mess with the firmware. May have to go that route... assuming the ISP tech support continues to be as unhelpful as they have so far. We'll check out SMC too. Thanks guys!

Not sure what you mean by this.

Have you tried running through a router?

We have a router. However, it sits behind the modem, which is where the problem is.

You can misreport the MAC address of pretty much any internal hardware with the proper software. I'd have to dig it up, but I used to clone the MAC of several LAN devices to avoid a registration block, and while I never used a modem with it, I would be surprised if I couldn't force a modem to do it as well.

I was wondering if the router was either the problem or might fix the problem depending on the connection lease. Anyway, if you're sure it's the modem and you're already behind a router, ignore me.

do a search on "Spoof Mac Address" or spoofing amc address.

It is doable, for anything that has a mac - although a cable modem may need specialized software not easily found.

Other than that, I'd suggest you simply buy the game, and get un-banned by steam....

Just kidding. But it could be used for that, too.

Kiddy porn, hackers, and other nefarious types have used mac spoofing software to conceal request origins. So as you start your quest, know that you'll be rubbing elbows with unsavory types.

Oddly, I had the same problem last year with Comcast. Seems the cable modem allows one and only one system access to the internet - unless I pay another $10 per month per system.... I could set up each system to access, and they could rotate through... but when the next system jumped on the net, it would block the others unless you manually rest the calls. So, I ignored their lame attempt at swindling a poor old man, bought a wireless router, put it behind the cable modem and - viola! - I run 4 systems: three at 54mbs and one at 100 mbs. The cable modem looks at the router as the authorized user, and everyones requeats run through that. Take that, you corporate rat-bastards!

So i gotta ask - what model of modem and router? maw
