I can't believe no one mentioned Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War in all of 30 posts.
Rome: Total War has a fun single player but almost no multiplayer. Dawn of War is the exact opposite, with a ****ty single player but a very competitive (if small) multiplayer community. It's a fun, vicious, innovative RTS. Unfortunately the company that makes it has a hard time understanding the basics of balance, but don't all RTS makers?
