Welcome to the page for the [size=11pt]3rd Uhlan Regiment
. We are an international realism unit, passionate about the history of the Polish forces that served alongside the French forces throughout the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Despite our laid back nature, we are dedicated to the memory of the values, traditions and history of the Polish Legions, and any members are expected to show that same level of dedication. Though our interest goes to all units of the Polish Legion, our focus is the 3rd Uhlan Regiment, a Polish cavalry regiment. We also double up as Polish Vistula Legion line infantry when needs be. Please find our forum at this address.
The 3rd Uhlans were formed in 1807, as one of the first regiments to be formed by the newly created Grand Duchy of Warsaw. They saw limited action during 1807, but made a name for themselves in 1809. Under Colonel Laczynski, the regiment (719 men strong) took a leading role in the Grand Duchy's war against Austria, which saw it reclaim much of the territory lost during the 3rd Polish Partition. The 3rd Uhlans then were attached to the large Polish Division that was part of the Grande Armée which invaded Russia during 1812. Fighting alongside the French Young Guard at Borodino, the 3rd Uhlans, by themselves, routed two regiments of Russian Cuirassiers, a regiment of Hussars, and a detachment of Russian infantry which were seeking to overrun the 1st Chassuers. They took part in the retreat from Russia and continued to serve Napoleon, including at the battle of Leipzig. In the seven years of their existence, the 3rd Uhlans fought in over thirty major engagements and were never routed. They are still considered one of Poland's greatest ever regiments and were seen to epitomise the fighting traditions of the Polish lancer.
The Uhlans were classically armed with saber, pistol and a lance. The regiments were organized along French lines as follows:
The Polish cavalry regiment consisted of staff and three or four squadrons of two companies each.
In 1810 cavalry company consisted of: four officers: one captain, one 1st lieutenant, and two 2nd lieutenants
One sergeant-major, four sergeants, one fourrier, eight corporals, one trumpeters, seventy-nine privates, and one blacksmith
Total strength = 100 men (+ 2 enfants de troupe)
The 4-squadron regiment was commanded by colonel.
The squadrons were under two chefs and two adjutants-majors.
There were also standard-bearer, trumpet-major and a few non-combatants.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q1. Do you need to speak Polish to be in the Third?
A1. Not at all. We don't operate in Polish, but in English. Only a few of are members are actually Polish.
Q2. What is a realism unit?
A2. A realism unit is one that aims to portray its chosen profession to the highest level of realism that is practicable. For example, we use proper Polish ranks, Polish names, and historically accurate formations and drill. We take this aspect of our unit very seriously.
Q3. So does that mean I'll have to give up my public name?
A3. Yes. All our members take Polish names. There is no getting around it.
Q4. This all seems good, but I can only make none/one of the training times a week. Is that a problem?
A4. Our basic requirement is that members can attend at least one training session a week. If you can't attend our times, we can't change them for one person, unfortunately. If you can only make one, which is the case for many of our American members, that is not a problem.
