The Vikings were actually known to use longbows from as far as 2 centuries before the first documented use of of Welsh longbows in the 11th century. Traditionally, I believe bows were believed to be less honorable than melee weapons, but there is little doubt that they were used at least to soften up enemies beforethe initial charge.
