PW GUIDE
DATABASE

I believe it is time to make one. There is a lot of profession to choose from. It is confusing for players as well as mapmakers {OK it is just me }.

Post if you can help. I need all possible info about it. If you preffer one profession more than other post as well and say why. Which one is better and for what? Etc.Etc.
Some stats definitions would be very helpfull as well.

EDITING IN PROGRESS

Jobs to do:
- putting all info together in some order.
- ask few more questions
- finish editing.

Generally I become more ambitious about this. I want to create complete PW guide based on professions...

For now use this : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoRHZwIqBE-udDBQZWxaV3ZxNFluTDdlQ0NTRVZVTEE&hl=en_US#gid=0
or this http://loppen.com/PW/troops.html  which is great and made all this thread a bit useless

PEASANT [completed]
peasant.jpg

"I am just cleaning here" - Broom [Short Wooden Pole, Flax Bundle]

Let's be honest: You do not want to be one. You start as one and you may finish as such if you will have to leave your faction.
It is good profession to start only because you have to...

Peasant is limited to food production. He can chop some wood if needed. Working as peasant in mine is time consuming.
Once again: Make some money and move on to better things as soon as you can.

QUICKEST WAY TO EARN MONEY: woodcutting
TIP: Do not harvest flax. You can do nothing with it anyway. Do not kill animals. You will get nothing from it.
SERF [completed] - I may put even more info here later.
serf.jpg

Serf is the legend, blood in veins of this world. He is not as strong as peasant, but he is far more cleaver and his work rate is what make him legendary...

Serf is great at woodcutting, but he can leave that job to somebody else. His main job is mining. He can mine iron and salt very efficiently. When he get tired of it and need some fresh air, serf can make some delicious food and drinks. He can harvest flax and weave linen. He can make clothing for him self. Nothing fancy but enough to look different. He can rise, herd and butcher animals for their meat and hide. He can prepare leather for tailor, however working with leather is to complicated for serf, most of the time. He is good with horses, but he needs help with making saddles or armor for it. Cart with Cart Horse is the thing, which can make serf very rich guy. There is also a lot of wheelbarrows, sacks and baskets around, which can help in serf work.

Life of serf is not perfect by any means. In this dangerous and cruel world there is a lot of guys who want to exploit serf hard work. Serf simply can not fight, however, when pushed to the limit, he can be quite dangerous. Serf need to stay close to other serfs or hire guards which protect him. You can always try to work for a faction. Cleaver Lord will protect his serfs. On the other hand faction soldiers may become serf biggest nightmare. They always hungry and they never have enough money. Cleaver serf will give them some food and few coins to keep them happy. He may need them when bandits come around. Oh,yes! Bandits. They are always around trying to rob "poor" serf. If you have to, give them what they want. Your tools, skills and your life is worth much more than few coins. Compere to you, bandits are truly poor people of this world. Try to understand: They are really desperate. If you show them a bit of heart they may become your best friends...NEVER!!!

Speaking about friends: Nothing make serf more angry that other serf stealing from him. Every day number of serfs die in fights over "priceless" bundle of wheat or iron ore. Try to remember that you can quickly get hundreds more of it. Just calm down and let him have it. On other hand: Do not steal from others!

Serf needs some help in his work. You can craft some staff by yourself, but necessary tools are made by craftsmen. You will start with small mining pick, hatchet or knife [randomly]. This are good for start but to get you really going you need proper tools:

woodcutting: woodcutter axe
mining: mining pick
butchering: butchering knife
harvesting wheat: sickle or scythe (scythe is better)
pruning: knife

You can buy this tools at the market. If there is nothing there try to find some craftsman to make it for you. I have to say it is not easy. Craftsmen are usually very busy..with crafting.

List of things serf can craft:
- Knobbed Mace[Stick+Iron Piece]
- Winged Mace[Stick+Iron Piece]
- Quarter Staff[Wooden Pole]
- Shortened Spear[Wooden Pole+Iron Piece]
- Plain Board Shield[3 Boards]
- Plain Kite Shield[2 Boards]
- Plain Round Shield[1 Board]
- Torch[Stick]
- Wheat Sack[Wheat Sheaf]

Serf can not smelt iron. You will need ask craftsman for iron piece if you really want to craft those. He will do it for you if you bring him iron ore and.. let him have what left from it after smelting

Wheat Sack is very important for wheat production. Without it you can not seed wheat on the field. Most of the time you can import it. It is more expensive than crafting it and buying from stockpile. If you can take some left overs from harvest [wheat sheaf] and craft some more.

List of clothing serf can craft:
Straw Hat [Wheat Sheaf]
Head Wrapping [Small Linen Cloth]
Headcloth [Small Linen Cloth]
Woolen Cap [Small Linen Cloth]
Felt Hat  [Small Linen Cloth]
Head Cloth [Small Linen Cloth]
Head Cloth [Small Linen Cloth]

Wrapping Boots [Small Linen Cloth]

Blue Hose [Small Linen Cloth]
Pointed Shoes [2 Small Linen Cloth]

QUICKEST WAY TO EARN MONEY: mining + cart [with cart horse]
TIP: Stay calm as long you can. Think about future and try to avoid troubles. It is good time to make some friends. Do not just be a busy bee. You have no much to loose at this stage. Give yourself a break and talk to someone.
REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE JUST A SERF! DO NOT CHALLENGE BIGGER THAN YOU! ROLE PLAY IN THIS CASE CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!

MILITIA  [completed]
militia.jpg

You can look at militiaman from two points of view. He may be just angry serf who had enough of being defenceless, or he may be "community worker" with mission to lead, organize and deffend village community. Difficult times need difficult decisions. If there is no other way to survive than with arms in your hand, militia is right option to choose.

He can fight. He is strong enough to wear light armor and skillfull enough to use light weapons. He is no match for professional soldier in duel, but fighting as a group militia can be very effective.

Militiaman can work. He is very poor miner, but he can cut wood and make all sort of food. He can butcher animals and tan leather. He can prepare[make] some horses but he need help from serf or craftsman, because he can not make even simple [wooden board] saddle. Unfortunately crafting for him is sort of black magic.

QUICKEST WAY TO EARN MONEY: the fact that you can make money as militiaman is good enough. Woodcutting or leather production if there are animals around.
TIP: buy your self good looking armor and proper sword or spear - you are one of the weakest fighters, but nobody has to know about it. You can try to make some money protecting serfs from bandits, but the best way is working your way up, slowly getting more money and spending it on better military training.
IF YOU [PLAYER] ARE EXPERIENCE FOOT FIGHTER YOU MAY LIKE THIS PROFESSION VERY MUCH!
HEALER  [completed]
healer.jpg

Healer is just a bit smarter villager. In every community you will find this person, which is a bit more sensitive, cleaver and fragile. Instead of flexing his muscle he decide to use his brain. He learned basic of medicine, tailoring and herding to avoid hard work in mines. He decide to help people in this tough times rather than fight with them.

Healer can treat wounds of humans and animals. He need a bit more time than doctor, but he is effective enough. You need Surgeon's Scalpel for it. It is usually quite expensive, which make it usually available in every market.

It would be mistake to think about healing as your main job. Healer skills in tailoring and herding combine with ability to work gives him plenty of options to make money. Healer do not need help from anyone in his job!

Tailoring + Herding + Laboring = you can harvest flux, spin it,weave it + you can butcher animals, get leather and tan it = you can craft clothes:

Crown of Flowers            Small Linen Cloth
Blue Head Scarf              Small Linen Cloth
Leather Head Scarf        Small Linen Cloth
Wimple                        Small Linen Cloth
Wimple                        Small Linen Cloth

Felt Hat                      Small Linen Cloth
Leather Cap                    Leather Piece
Nomad Cap                    Leather Piece
Padded Coif                    Small Linen Cloth
Steppe Cap                    Leather Piece
Red Dress                    Linen Cloth
Green Dress                  Linen Cloth
Blue Dress                    Linen Cloth
Red Pattern Dress            Linen Cloth
Red Dress                      Linen Cloth
Brown Dress                    Linen Cloth

Orange Dress                Linen Cloth
Blue Dress                    Linen Cloth
Leather Dress                Leather Roll
Bride Dress                  Linen Cloth
Red Shirt                      Linen Cloth
Fur Coat                      Leather Roll
Skirmisher Armor          Linen Cloth

Archer's Padded Vest        Linen Cloth
Ragged Outfit                  Linen Cloth
Nomad Armor                  Leather Roll

Healer can make food! Again,he do not need anyone here! He can butcher animals to get meat as well as he can harvest wheat. It will take him a bit longer than serf but not as long to make it impossible and boring.
Healer can prepare (craft) basic horse but he has no clue how to make saddle. He can, however, cut and process wood.

As a fighter healer is one of the worst. He can wear light armor and use dissent arms to help himself a little here.

QUICKEST WAY TO EARN MONEY: probably tailoring, the fact that you do not have to pay for resources make it really profitable. Healing needs RP and is rather hobby here than job. Saying that, desperate player may drop a lot of money for it.
TIP: Be flexible, change from job to job to see, which is the safest way. The best thing about healer is that whatever you do you make money. Stay alive and avoid troubles. Be helpfull to get some friends. Show others how usefull you can be. Wear good looking armor because it is your only defence. You can use Scimitar as your primary weapon, which give you some advantage if you really have to fight.
YOU CAN RUN THE TAVERN! - with ability to heal as well as make food this is perfect job for you. Get some guards to help you.
[size=10pt]CRAFTSMAN  [completed]
craftsman.jpg

Craftsman is true handyman. It is easier to say what he can not do than what he can. Very versatile in deed. His main job is, obviously, crafting. He is excellent tailor. He can make food. He can cut wood if he need to. He can even mine some iron ore if he is patient enough. The one thing he has no clue about is animals. He can make saddle but knows nothing about horses. He can not butcher meat or hide. He can tan leather if he gets raw hide from serf.

As a blacksmith craftsman is in apprentice stage. He can process wood and smelt iron. He can craft basic weapons and tools, light armors and all clothing.

Interesting fact: Craftsman is strong enough to use or wear most of the things he can craft.

There are things which ONLY craftsman can make:
Pointed Leather Boots [2 Leather Piece]
Black Leather Boots [2 Leather Piece]

He can craft whatever serf or healer can, as well as this:

QUICKEST WAY TO EARN MONEY: Craftsman is only one profession which can do both: mine (this will take some time) gold/silver nuggets and smelt it into gold/silver bars. To find out is it quickest way than crafting, the race should be held.[update: IT TAKES AGES ]
TIP: If you like individual play craftsman is perfect for you. Stay close to serfs as they can quickly deliver resources you need and you can make tools they need. Your place is rather in village/town than castle, however faction can find you very usefull. Opposite to engineer you can switch from task (food production) to task (crafting). You can fix few doors as well. It is good way to master craftsman before moving to engineer and master smith. You can even try to work for bandits... Try to avoid fighting. You have no such a skills.
REMEMBER TO LOOK GOOD! YOU ARE NOT SERF!

MERCENARY [completed]
mercenary.jpg

This is very interesting profession. The key word: POTENTIAL. The key tactic: ROLE PLAY.
A lot of players want to be one. Almost everybody choose it when (I mean: only when) he has to.

If you believe that this is profession for desperate players..well, you are wrong. If you want to create independent role play group without fighting for own castle this is perfect profession for you. If you change your mind (and decide to fight for own castle) it is still perfect to be mercenary.

Let's see what mercenary can do:
- He CAN fight!!! Big time: on horse/on foot/with 1h weapons and polearms/with Xbow - He is not that good at it as professional soldier, but way better than the rest of professions + he can use Xbow better than everybody apart of Xbowman.
- He CAN craft weapons (very basic ones) and armors (very basic ones)
- He CAN produce linen
- He CAN sail faster than most of professions. - there is potential to play as pirate here!

Mercenary is one of this professions which can fight and make money for them self. He is the best fighter from this group. His main goal is to take castle and start new faction, but this is not the end of his possibilities.

As Mercenary you can play as... Mercenary. You will be good enough to support some faction war effort and not good enough to become real threat. There is the catch here. In very realistic, historical way, if mercenaries form the group they may become very, very dangerous. They may feel strong enough to take on employers.

Mercenary CAN take own life in his own hands and become the beginning of something new.

To check what you can or can not craft as mercenary [enginnering:1 ; tailoring:1 ] go here

QUICKEST WAY TO EARN MONEY: If you cleaver and good role player try to trade or hire your self. You can just make some cloths or weapons. The best about being mercenary is that possibilities are endless. The "worst" is that you have to have some skills to use them.
TIP: CREATE WARBAND!!! Alone you are nobody. Make some friends. Help here and there. Get more money in anyway possible to get better equipment. You can use almost all good armors and weapons!. Use it!
Wait as long as it takes before you make attempt to take some castle. Preparations are everything!.

FACTION PROFESSIONS are used for war effort. They are all soldiers good in fighting, maybe apart of doctor.
They all have one special skill in which they are the best. Only master smith here is just better engineer.
I may put some more info here, but this professions do not need explanation, really.

master smith - how to craft horse armor? how to craft advanced armors?
sailor - how to sail? what is the best armor for you?
archer - what is the best bow in PW? [basic: how to aim and shoot effectivly in fast battle enviroment],what is the best armor for you?
crossbowman - what is the best Xbow in PW? what is the best armor for you?
footman - what is the best polearm in PW? what is the best armor for you?
seargent - what is the best 2h in PW? what is the best armor for you?
lancer - what is the best horse in PW? what is the best armor for you?
man at arms - is it really the best? why I (personally) always choose to be one?
lord - how to be a "good" one? how to rule/lead? what options/features are available to you? how to create successful faction? how to become one? OH YES, THIS IS THE BIG ONE!

Anyway, it's about time there was a complete guide about Pw. Make us proud nov, and good luck

Actually this would be more 'user' friendly, very helpful indeed.

Goodluck Novicus, i might lend a hand with some of the info if i have spare time

Patience darling I just start it.

Peton, hirovard,Dark Hamlet - thanks for support.

I have to test my self a lot of things but I also will have a lot of questions. If you have spare time post whatever comes to your mind.

BTW.I have read all thread about it and neither give me 100% info what I can or can not do playing as serf. I have never play as craftsman. I just find out that militia can work and has some herding skills, so is Healer - quite cool as he has tailoring as well. I have no clue what "engineer 7" mean in case of master smith.

There is a lot of questions here. I do not know what numbers really mean in many cases. Call me nob if you want but I need to find out all this to make my map. If I will help others in the meantime? GREAT!

Master smiths are the only class that can produce armour,

Serfs can gather wheat, flax make linen, not sure about clothes mine oregather wood and heard/ gather meat and hides from animals. Turn hide into leather rolls.

I don't think craftsmen can process iron into weapons, or even the ore ( needs confirming) only make wooden stuff.

Sergeant is superior to man at arms in everyway, except riding skill

Hopes this helps

That really does. Thanks.

I'm almost sure that it isn't true. If I remember well, as a craftsman, I managed to craft a leather breastplate. Craftsman can do a lot of things, like tools and process wood and iron ore (almost sure, I'll test it and edit my message later).

(TWD)Tom said:
Is there specific light armors that craftsmen can make and heavier more complex armors only master smiths can make?

Yes, most clothes too, and there are now even some weapons that only the master smiths can make, like the great sword.

Thanks for that. I will go through all profession with testing in dedicated server.

It would be very helpfull if someone could give a little intro to each class. I mean something in good English.

Based on the tests, craftsman can process wood, iron, tan leather, harvest, spin and weave linen, craft most tools (with the exception of the surgeon scalpel), clothes, light equipment, etc. I don't know about the weapons, because there are many types and the craftsmen aren't supposed to craft weapons in the community map.

Yeah  Craftsman slowly become my favorite. It is very independent profession. You can do almost everything by your self.

I have to say..This is interesting...
tailoring:
1 - Serf
2 - Healer
3 - Craftsman

What Healer can do what serf can not? I know already that serf can produce linen and leather rolls. He can craft simple robe and pair of leather shoes.

EDIT: Wrong. Serf can not craft leather shoes.

Sorry for misleading. It is actually just Flower and Raw Meat.

I thought it is more as I try a lot of staff.
