I travelled to Florence back in June and took a large number of photographs which I would like to share with you. I believe that these photo's could be of some use to modders and I would be very happy if I could help people understand the layout of the city and its history with them.

I will try to give you all a brief description of the photo's as well.

This is the city of Florence. The photo was taken from the Piazzale Michelangelo

I thought since we see Florence as a Renaissance city it would be interesting to show an example of Gothic Architecture in the city.

Every year on the 24th of June, the Florentines celebrate the feast day of St John the Baptist. The celebrations start with a parade through the city, then there is a a game that is played in front of the Santa Croce called Calcio Storico. It is essentially a cross between rugby and boxing.

These women were dancing to renaissance music and are dressed in replica dresses based on the fashions of the early 16th century.

It is said that the first parade took place during the siege of Florence in 1529. Therefore the reenactors you see in these photos are dressed in military uniform from that time.

Judging from his Baton with its Fleur-de-lis decoration, I believe the man on the horse represents the general of Florence.

I think these photo's could be very useful for scene developers.

Images of the western gate of the Oltrarno district (south of the river.) I took the second photo to give you an idea of the scale.

Another southern gate.

Another southern gate. I should point out that on the inside of the gate there were frescos of the virgin mary and other religious images. Unfortunatley my camera couldnt take detailed photo's of them, but I'm sure there are examples on the internet.

Heres an example of the fresco depicting the virgin Mary.

As you'll probably know, Dante was born and brought up in Florence during the 13th century. I visited his home which has now been turned into an excellent museum.

Dante lived in what was called a tower-house. During the medieval age, tower houses were being built by families all over Italy to not only express their wealth but also be used as a form of defence against rival factions.

Here is an image to give you an idea of the layout of Florence during the lifetime of Dante. Again I believe this could be very helpful for scene builders.

Here is a diorama of the Battle of Campaldino. It was part of the long running conflict between the Guelphs and The Ghibellines. Dante was present at the battle, fighting for Florence as a Guelph.

Below are what I believe to be banners for different families or factions within the city, although I could be wrong so if someone could give some information on them it would be appreciated.

I believe this is a symbol of the Guelphs, but I tend to get Guelphos and Ghibellines mixed up so if someone could correct me that would be great!

Below are some images to give you an idea of the borders of the different city states during the second half of the 13th century. I apologise for the bad quality but I hope they can be of some use to someone.

Here is a map of Europe during the second half of the 13th century. The coat of arms represent Florentine merchant families that were trading in that area. Below you will see the names of the families of each coat of arms.

I really hope these images are of some use to the modding community. All of these photo's were taken by myself and I would encourage anyone to use these as reference for their work. If you know of anyone who might find these images useful, please link this thread to them. Thank you.

Very cool. And equally cool that you posted them. The layout for Florence and the tower house idea could make for some awesome mod additions. I think urban warfare in Warband is one of the most fun scenarios there is, but it's only given in short, small battles after breaching the wall of a town. Fighting through the streets and dealing with tower houses could be awesome.

Nice stuff you've got there. Also some recommendations for when visiting Tuscany, are Siena and Pisa.
