Timezones during summer

Users who are viewing this thread

A lot of people don't know that the time-zones of all countries are advanced one hour during summer time.
If you were in the time-zone GMT+0 during Winter, you are now in GMT+1. For example the current time in Britain (usually GMT) is not GMT+0, but rather GMT+1 now. UTC-time-zones are also advanced one hour. There are tow options to list time now: in GMT+0 or in GMT+1. With the first option, everyone has to know that he or she has to adds one additional hour to the hour he usually adds or detracts to get his local time. With the second option everyone can stick to the previously number of added or detracted hours, ie. someone from England wouldn't have to add any hours to a GMT#1 time, while Germans would have to add the usual one hour they'd also have in Winter with GMT+1.

As graphics can describe it maybe a bit better (I only have a European map, other continents can however still find their time in the links):

Blue=GMT+1 | Red=GMT+2 | Yellow=GMT+3 | Green=GMT+4

Well it's irrelevant what timezone the match is set in. The problem arises because people have no idea what timezone they are in.

The match could be set in GMT+11 and it doesn't matter, so long as people know what their timezone is.

Of course, people need to know what Timezone they are in
But not what timezone they are in when they are in Summer time.
They only need to know their standard-always-used timezone + whether its summer time or not.

You're just adding an extra calculation into the mix. It's far more sensible to make the information clear and for everyone just to get it right.

Trying to cater for people misinterpreting the information is nothing but a slippery slope.

I find using BST (British Summer Time) the easiest for arranging things during the summer. Same as GMT in winter then, only the name is different.

Unfortunately only a minority knows what BST is - at least in my experience.

That works to, except that those who dont follow summer time have to do - 1.

The clock on my PC is automatically switched to summer time and so are most clocks and watches around me (and I suppose everyone else as well).
If I calculate matches and the like in winter time, but my clocks and watches are in summer time, I will always need to detract one hour from the time currently displayed on my clock, which sounds quite complicated.
