Need Help About Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantine Empire - 600AD

Hello guys, we want to start a mod in 600AD-650AD

Can anyone help us to find most important 10 city, 25 most important castle (or castle-city together) and some important small cities/villages ? (in Byzantine/E.Roman Empire)

Actually I found so many cities and castles, but we cannot add them all. Personally I couldnt be sure that which ones were more important then others. I will be happy for any help

I doubt you can call any of those villages, even in the 7th century. You probably need much more detailed maps if you want to see proper villages. Remember the Mount & Blade world takes just a few days to travel across, that is roughly on the scale of Sicily. Scaling up to cover the entire Roman empire and more will require very much work (as you say, you cannot even include all towns) or changing the gameplay to not include villages, only larger towns/cities.

If you still choose to model those places as villages, you should at least consider upgrading Ravenna to a city. As one of matmohair1's maps shows, it was the administrative capital of the Italian part. By the same argument I guess Thessaloniki should also be a city, though I must admit it does not immediately spring to mind for me in the same way as Ravenna.

If Ravenna and Thessaloniki are considered cities, you will have all the praefectural capitals (those two plus Carthage and Constantinople), and your list already includes all the patriarchal cities (Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem). Make sure you have not missed any of the biggest cities in population and economy, as far as this can be wikipedia-estimated, and I think you will have an alright list of the most important cities. I suspect that Trebizond and Ankyra do not deserve to be in the top 10, but if the goal is to fill a game world with somewhat evenly spread cities, I guess including them makes sense.

Updated ! Is it okay now ? Can anyone check it ?

Are you basing the Italian, African and Spanish "villages" on the maps in your own post? Bear in mind that those are 800+ years earlier than 600 A.D. Unfortunately, I do not have any better maps myself. I can check my books in about a week.

I couldnt find better maps, but I think that cities/villages maybe didnt change their name according to same culture and empire ruled in same area. Of course it could be wrong. I would be happy for your checking Thank you for your help
