"HERR_BUFFER_LOCK_FAILED!"

Hi, I bought the game in August and I've had this issue since then so it's nothing to do with the current patch. Basically the issue is the game locking up/black screening randomly which is only fixed by alt-tabbing, but it's a losing battle because it'll just do it again 5 minutes later. Of course this makes playing online an extremely frustrating experience - ie; freeze, die, rinse and repeat.

My rgl_log turns this up and it seems to be the cause of my issue, I only found one other thread with someone mentioning this.
"HERR_BUFFER_LOCK_FAILED!
641618
HERR_BUFFER_LOCK_FAILED!
641619
HERR_BUFFER_LOCK_FAILED!
641620
HERR_BUFFER_LOCK_FAILED!
641621
HERR_BUFFER_LOCK_FAILED!
641622"

I found an easy way of reproducing this by speaking to someone in singleplayer over and over again, this gives me the same error I get when I lock up during battle. The game never crashes to desktop though so I never see any rgl error message.

Windows XP
Athlon 64 X2 2.8GHz
Radeon HD4870 using catalyst 10.4
2GB RAM
Realtek HD Audio

I'm not expecting any miracles (or any posts) but here's a list of things I can recall trying. I'll probably add more things here as I continue wasting my time trying to fix this. Updating my catalyst to 10.11 is not an option because of the OpenGL issues it has, downgrading doesn't seem appealing either.

Altered render_buffer_size to a higher value.
Reinstalled, deleted everything relating to the game.
Using a single core.
Disabling all sound and hardware acceleration.
Windowed mode.
Using the DirectX 7 mode with all graphics options turned off.
Monitoring memory usage during the lockup (it doesn't do anything strange).
Changing my flip queue (pre-rendered frames) to values ranging from 0-5.
Using a max framerate lower or much higher than my refresh rate.
Using an external refresh rate override.
It's definitely not overheating issues.
Disabling catalyst AI.
Forced vysnc and triple buffering.
"Load textures on demand" on/off.
Turning off anti virus/firewall.

Edit: Forget that, Kapersky is not the issue. Back to square one.

It might be worth trying to comment out all buffer_size lines. (That would be the same lines that you increased the values for) in the beginning of game_variable.txt.

I meant I changed the value in the rgl_config.txt., but I changed it back to 15 after commenting those lines (black screen after loading screen, makes me think increasing that value wasn't such a good idea).

Thanks I think that this has made the situation better but it's still there, I'll take what I can get though. I managed a whole map without a lockup, amazing.

I have been having this problem too, with varying amounts since I bought Warband.

I can't see how commenting the lines out will help, but what the heck, I'll try anything.

Tried it.

First castle I assaulted:

Everything worked great, the whole battle, no lockups.  FPS bottomed out around 11 or so, with about 200 guys, about 75-100 guys on the screen.

Second castle:

Started happening early, then kept happening every few seconds.  Eventually the game locked- sounds were still playing, so the sim was obviously still running, but the screen was black, with the exception of the FPS meter, which curiously enough was still rendering (the number was 0.2 or so, though, heh).

It seems like this always happens after a bit of playing, never at the start, and gets worse over time.  It's like something builds up over time and never clears out.

Hmm.  Seems that it trips up somewhere around 31000.  Going to try to set those variables to 30000, see what happens.

30000 means that I don't even get through the first battle, lol.  At least I can see what's locking it up, though- it's whenever new troops spawn.

Trying 65536.

That worked for a bit longer, but then failed again, right at the start of a battle.

I shall double it (and watch myself run out of RAM, heh).  It's interesting that this seems to be a problem with memory.  Looks like the theory that it's a memory leak might be right.

OK, watching the behavior, I don't see any memory leak happening.

What I *do* see is memory creeps up a lot over time, and the vertex buffer must be growing a lot, due to objects laying on the battlefield from the dead.  That may explain why sieges are where this problem tends to be the worst (although any big battle can trigger it).

Hmm.  Writing some code to test this theory shouldn't be too hard.

Well, I tried the theory that it has something to do with dropped items.  No dice.

Whatever it is, it's definitely happening when new troops spawn.  Maybe the Simple Behavior AI or the pathfinder?

Hi!
now it's about a year since you worked with that problem. I got the same problem and i'm rly pissed off, because i like so much playing mount & blade, but with that problem its pain in the ass =//.
do you have any suggestions how to fix it or at least make it "better", so i can "survive" a battle? I mean can u write a tutorial for a noob (step 1:...; step 2:.... etc.)?

Thx

Good luck. I'm not converting files for you.

Xenoargh is still active on the forums. You should ask him for the .wav files.

Hello Guys, I know this is an OLD topic, but still hope someone will look on it. (I hate spammming forums with 254935 topics with the same problem )

So, I have the same problem as my predecessor described, only that I am playing ONLY SINGLEPLAYER.
I understood that this is something that comes with multiplayers and servers or wha, but it is not my case, I never play MP.

So here is the rgl_log

------LOG END-------

Any thoughts? It did freeze my game, not always, only when we advance to the enemy's spawning position. Oh, and I am using Brytenwalda mod.

Thanks a lot.
