Anyway here is my effort:

Dammit, I saw that exact lamellar armor in another mod yesterday. Maybe it was Age of Change? I think their main skinner/modeller did a full Varangian set just this weekend, vambraces and all.

Edit:

Zimke Zlovoljni does nice work. If you wanted more armor variety in among the Varangians, maybe he would let us use it if asked nicely and was given credit?
no its not mine, mine is better

@kuauik

I love your byz. lords clothes, but can you do them in colors other than pink  ( purple whatever ), I don't feel right walking around in them

Always so modest

But you both do great work, I think. I'm envious of people who are able to skin and texture like that.
Still there's no harm in asking if you would like to include someone else's work though. Most of Zimke's models are actually from around 1257 (I think). And more variety is a good thing!

Can you make Michail Palaeologos pretender for the Byz  :?: but with a little twist, he would be localized inside Byz territory and his dialog should be altered so when you first talk to him he is a loyal subject of the current Emperor, but with a bit of persuading ( a lot actually ) he is willing to try a coup, after all the word byzantine dose mean to plot as well as elaborate scheming and intrigue.

I just got my hands on two byzantine history books, if you need anything just let me know and i'll se if i can get any info out of 'em

I'd recommend giving probably round shields to some or all of the:

Peltastae
Acritae
Toxotae
Mourtati

Reasoning:
1) From Ian Heath's Armies and Enemies of the Crusades 1090 to 1290: http://d.imagehost.org/0668/Byzantines.jpg

2) Osprey's MAA 287 Byzantine Armies 1118-1461
  • Page 18, Illustration from Romance of Alexander the Great (hard to place the date, they say the archers have shields commended in the 10th century. The Heavy Archers have circular shields on their arms or backs
  • The first illustration by the Osprey authors has an infantryman, armed with sword and a very thin spear, and a leather jerkin. The commentary mentions "other light infantry carried only a bow and shield"

From Armies and Armor of the Crusading Era (Al Mansur I think has access to it, so he can verify it for me)
1) #116 - depiction of "Goliath" in a 12th century Byzantine manuscript. HAs Goliath armed like a byzantine skirmisher, with javelin, straight broadsword, large round shield, and what seems to be a chapel de fer(kettle hat).
2) There is another depiction of a very well armored archer (With mail shirt, mail chausses) but without a shield, but there aren't many other depictions of ranged troops in it.

Lastly it's because without shields, archers and javelineers are left exceedingly vulnerable to the always shield equipped Latin Archers/Crossbowmen (at least the higher end troops). Might also recommend giving spathae swords (Saw one ingame) or other ones to at least the elite archers/skirmishers.

Also might suggest giving the itm_woolen_cap to the starting byzantine city/village levies, maybe also the first level Peltasts and Toxotaes (since that Phyrgian style cap seems popular for Anatolian troops).

Sorry to necro this thread, but i was thinking of making some byzantine houses and i need some research because i cant seem to find squat about it. The closest thing i could find of the common mans house during this period is this. I may be wrong, but it looks like a roman insulae to me . Maybe i dont know where to look, but i searched extensively in google and all i could find was their fancy buildings. Some help please.

I have found some useful links on the polish historians forum, even if google translate cant translate it, there are some pictures:

It's certainly not "Roman" (as in republican/imperial/Western Roman), you can see it from its style. Also, IIRC, Melnik was established mostly during the medieval times.
Otherwise, sorry, but I'm not that good at architectural history, so I can't be of much help there.

Hmm, would round convex shields like these still be present? I know by the time of the mod, most of the soldiers would be using the round kite shields but i saw this osprey illustrations of a byzantine soldiers from this period wielding this shield.

This is a very interesting illustration on the theme of the Eastern Roman military history publisher Concord.

Bringing this over from a previous post, I think it is highly relevant to the subject matter

No kings or emperor's have children to marry, however there is one claimant to the throne who does have a child in the game the Emperor of Trebizon.

I was wondering can it be made available that if you marry his daughter, eliminate him from the game and personally control Constantinople can you gain the title of Emperor  and get the Strategos title for your vassals.

I also noticed that his wife and children have Mongolian names and titles I was wondering if this could be corrected for aesthetic reasons.

The main reason I am posting this is that there should be a way to have the title strategos for your lords if you wish to rebuild the Empire as well as a way to proclaim yourself Emperor
