Same.  I know from past playthrough never to rely on just one person for doing all the healing.  If your medic goes down and he's the only one with those skills, you're going to be out of action for a long, long time.  Even if you've got someone else doing wound treatment, if no one else is doing first aid and the other guy gets knocked out in another round, you're still screwed.

Spreading those skills around can keep your party going for much longer, imho.  Besides, I like to put trainer on all my high-INT guys because of the way that skill scales at high levels.

That's just mean.

I upgrade trainer to myself highest to 5-7, while I use Lezalit as a trainer. In my current game he is level 32, and has trainer skill 10.

EDIT:
the only thing I don't like about them is the quarrel.

I use them both: if one of them gets KO'd, the other heals mih/her.

I just have Jeremus as my Doctor companion. I assigned him to unnamed 6, renamed it Jeremus, then I press 9 -> F1 -> F5 in each field battle. In sieges, I just tell him to hold a spot where he won't get lit up by the archers.

Firentis was my first companion, and I have always been partial to him. A war veteran that did a terrible deed that made him a shell of a man. Although, Marnid was my first diplomat, and Bunduk also has a lot in common with me

Alas, I voted Bunduk.

I found him in Praven later after doing this.

I would have liked Firentis if he didn't whine whenever I do something bad.

I like the player line when he says that he's lost. "Well, good luck finding your way back."

Haha! I love the player lines for the companions.

"You there! get me a drink, if you will."

"YOU DO IT!" *ragequit*

Oh my, i never expected Matheld to be more loved than Ymira, kinda hoping a turn of tables., and Alayen is hated, haha! SO expected

I was happy Ymira was at the top

Got to say I was surprised to see Matheld above her in rating!
I also really love to have Alayen and Firentis
Alayen loves Ymira and both of them are so honorable.

That's a not bad idea at all.  Kind of a pain though.  Hard enough issuing pre-battle commands as it is.

Personally, I do a lot of fighting by myself, which means having only a dozen or so companions around to do the killing (or at least meatshielding).  Having one or two AWOL each time would probably stretch the rest of them past the breaking point.  Besides, always good to have to have the healers rack up a few kills for the extra experience, although I suppose 30 INT is easy enough to hit in a longer game.

Yeah, me too!

My favourite is Deshavi. She is free , has the very useful (for the early levels) Path finding skill and more importantly, she CAN kill fleeing khergits (i give her a horse and raise her horse archery skill).

Well Deshavi is good ranger. On my current game her Power Draw skill is 10 and Horse archery is about 5-7. Archery skill about 250, and she is level 35.

I think I'm the first to mention Borcha? Love that guy. His story is something all of us could fall into and his path-finding skills help TREMENDOUSLY to the team. I'm beginning to value speed over medicine nowadays.

Followed by Nizar. Every gang needs a pimp.

Then Jeremus. Alas, he would be higher up but he doesn't like looting. Tsk tsk.

That quote is so great in context.  You've ruined Jeremus' life, but it's impossible not to laugh.

Somebody said earlier that they keep certain companions out of combat, but how do you do that?  I'm fed up with half of them being injured and out of commission most of the time, and losing their party skills.  How do you stop them from being on the battlefield, or do you just order all your companions far from the fight?

I'm trying to find Lezalit but he's not showing up anywhere.  I don't like his personality much, but in terms of being a fighter and trainer he's by far the best.  Artimenner and Jeremus have pretty good and funny personalities.

Lezalit, Matheld and Artimmener. Not one of them cares about my compulsive slaving of Rhodok peasants.

F1 them at start location is a good least effort tactic. You can also order them to move back (formation order). Depending on the battle, they may still encounter some enemy cavalry that runs them over, but in a winning battle it should generally be sufficient to keep them out of harms way.

I've never seen a way to keep troops out of fight (other than for those under health limit), but I could be mistaken.

Assign them to their own group.  Then order them to hold position or retreat at the start of battle.

I assign all my "skill" companions--tracker, engineer, medic, & emissary (if I've got one)--to a group I name "Medics."  It works pretty well.

Thanks mate, that works perfectly.  Another feature that I didn't even know about.  Shame I don't get more time to issue orders to all the groups before enemy cavalry are able to attack us, but I suppose that's the whole point of cavalry - and the whole point of hills, hehe.  With these assignable groups I can have two teams of archers and try to set up triangulated fire if there's time.  I don't enjoy playing an archer much, but I love seeing my archers tear an army apart.

I actually got Deshavi early on, made money, then gave her some great armor while putting points into her Horse Archery skill. Now, she's a deadly, well-armored, unkillable horse archer that would make the Khergits proud!
