Oh I feel this has been asked countless times...

Lezalit: a battle hardened, harsh trainer who also stands firmly on the battlefield.

That noble guy i always liked, he was cool.
EDIT: acctualy now i remember my knight commander was alyaways that warrior noble woman.. I think veagir or nord. Damn cant remember name xD

yes this has been asked a thousand times, but still fun to answer

while other companions can be more useful I have a soft spot for Ymira.  I think it was because she was the 1st companion I ever met, and I thought her introduction was hilarious.  something along the lines of "I'm a daughter of a well to do merchant, I didn't like my station in life so I decided to become a mercenary, I am skilled at cleaning the house, managing servants and cooking, want to hire me?"

I immediately gave her a full suite of armor, the biggest two handed sword she could wield at her starter level and sent her off to cause great slaughter.

since then she has also become skilled at throwing axes at exposed faces, bashing skulls with morning stars, impaling knights on their own lances and sniping cowards in castles with big crossbows.  Her parents would be proud

Matheld?

My personal favorite is Ymira.  You get her early, so you can customize her any way you want to.  It takes a while, but she can become a monster on the battlefield, a master trader, a skilled surgeon, or whatever else you want her to be.  I guess you could say the same for Marnid, but I guess I'm a soft touch for Ymira's sob story!

yeah her, i dunno why i kind of liked her, in sieges towards the end i could always see her kill somewhere around 5-10 peoples on her own. When i conquered all of calradia i gave everyone fiefs but her i think i gave the most..
But yeah those who start off with lower level can become more powerfull, which is kind of odd if u think about it...

Seconded, she usually is my emissary.

Oh man, definitely Jeremus. In the middle of all this feudal warfare and backwards politics, it's nice to have someone looking to the future! To SCIENCE. Or, you know, some leech-obsessed, grave-robbing approximation of science, anyway.

Yeah, she's one of my favourites too; while I equip all my other compagnions like Doppelsoldners or Sergeants (depends on the mod), I still give her a court dress (I messed with the item_kinds1.txt-file to do that), and arm her only with a Sword. She becomes an even better surgeon than Jeremus.
But my favourite compagnion is Artimenner, a rather modest man ('I don't do too badly on the battlefield' or something like that, with 100+ weapon profiencies!), but a really good fighter and a professional soldier. And he looks like a tough veteran in the armour I give him (which he is, of course).

EDIT:

Ha, I LOVE telling him he is barbarian scum. ("I would prefer more civilized company" -- with my 4 in INT!)

Artimenner is first companion I met, and one of my favourites. When he level up, I just upgrade engineer and power strike and sometimes ironflesh.

Fourthed.  I made both her and Marnid max out First Aid first chance I got. Let crusty old Jeremus handle the Surgery, I just can't stand losing my own health during a battle (or my companions for that matter).  Nizar is also quite nice in this category too.  Decent fighter right from the start, but with lots of points to spread around for other things.  I somewhat regret making him my engineer instead of a merch, as it would have fit his character better.  Instead, I had Alayen max out Trade, just to spite him for his little hate-on against Marnid for being a merchant.

Isn't it Nizar who says that?
