High level guys in leather armour with a wooden club on a ****e horse.

Slavers ftw!

Nah, heavy cav, they're useful buggers no matter what kind of character you're playing. And I get attached to my little binary men, I don't like seeing them die and heavy cav seem to live longer.

You are missing a selection. Light calvery, I am of a scottish clan who use to be one of the best light calvery units. Just get some would be knights but don't upgrade.

I agree, light calvary is extremely useful in war, or it's equivelent of fast, lightly(for the type/army/nation/technology/etc) armoured troops. Good for raids, flanking, skirmishing, etc. They should be in the poll, and need to be in the game as an upgrade branch.

foot archers.. especifically crossbowmen and marksmen.. you get quite a few of them (20ish) and they'll kill everything that comes riding or running at you

Heavy Cavalry is the Ragnarok for footmen. At least in my mod "Units from Knights of Honor". Feudal Knights and/or Cataphracts will guarantee victory. It's quite boring to play with cavalry, because they kill everyone very fast and I get no target for my halberd.

Heavy cav. I would have picked archers/ranged but for the simple reason that they never seem to fire as much as I want them too. They aim, then they waddle and wheeze and toddle about a bit, then get speared in the head by the enemy cav. If they actually lined up in a neat formation, held their ground when told to and laid down a massive barrage of fire when you got 20ish of them in the field, it'd be no contest. Am I missing something with the use of these fellas?

I couldn't agree more. I love foot archers but they never effectively fire. They walk around to get a line of fire but they block other's line by doing that. And other's stop firing and starts to move to get a line of fire. Ehm I think you got it, infinite chain reaction. Why can't they just stand in a simple line formation and start firing without moving around continously.

I play with pure heavy cavalry armies since that guarantees a high overland speed so I get to pick my battles, which cuts down on the annoyance factor.

Also, the game does a great job of simulating a cavalry charge. I love thundering across the plain with my lance lowered, spearing one or two enemies on the first hit, followed by the sound of the rest of my knights smashing into the enemy formation and cutting them to ribbons.

Now if they could just figure out how to ride abreast and not run into each other during the charge...

Heavy Cavalry. I prefer Infantry, but for the mere task of Heavy infantry (Dismounting and forming a big mass to catch any charging cavalry) can be filled by dismounted horsemen.

But heavy cavalry? They can smash infantry, cavalry, and the terrifying ranged units (I am HATING bigmods Bowmen samurai.)

ok a few replies :

i decided not to include light cavalry, as horse archers fall under the same category in m&b, as the also carry melee weapons and often use them.
also not meaning to cause offense to anyone, but not cavalry upgrade tree ends in a light cavalry unit, so from this it is clear that heavy cav., as a rule, are *better*. light cavalry may be useful irl, but there is not currentlly enough tactical diversity in m&b to make them as useful.

as for archers not firing, try mixing a few cav. with yuor army, not giving any orders, and just keeping the enemy occupied. given enough time, foot archers will spread out around an enemy infantry group and *oblitterate* it.
this is my personal (rock paper scissors) guide : HEAVY CAV. own
ARCHERS own. INFANTRY own CAVALRY ( but only equal level cavalry )

oh, and i'd put horse archers in the same place as archers, but they get *wiped* by foot archers.

Rally to me brothers!

Foot archers rock, especially with the good AI that's in place now.

Shrug, I rather prefer heavy infantry. Cavalry tend to run into a mess of foot, and get themselves slaughtered, not to mention more often than not just get in my way.

I also tend to play unmounted as well, seeing as riding by, slashing from one side to the other, quickly bores me. Also I feel at the moment lances are grossly overpowered.
