yup, not everybody like it
also, i forgot it few minutes ago...this is my 1st bike, made by DDR ;] Mz
it wasn't this one, don't have any of it's pics near me, i'm at work atm. Color and model was same, mine was...well...dirtier

The HD looks like a goddamn beached whale in comparison to even other HDs.

Now that's a Harley I could get along with.

well, if everything will be allright (means-if my fiance will accept it) ,and the bank will be cooperative  at the end of the year i will hopefully be a proud owner of this monster:
HD V-rod ;]

It MIGHT have looked okay had somebody not stuck a pair of coffee flasks on the side of it in place of a proper exhaust. But the tank also looks ridiculous, the combination of matte black and metallic black is just lame, the red tyre rims are hideous and the seat looks like it was made to fit the ass of Oprah Winfrey at her fattest. Plus it's far too raked, and the headlight would look so much better without the silly cowling around it.

Also, I'm not a big fan of Harleys in general either.

As long as you like it, that's all that counts. Don't let anybody put you off, because no one kind of bike will be attractive to every person.

In other news, I always knew that my bike weighed 200kg. I just never realised it weighed ~32 stone.

I have an admission to make. This might come as a shock to some people, and it will undoubtedly disappoint others, and might even make one or two lose faith in me. But I think I need to finally be honest and admit the truth that I have been trying to hide for the past few weeks.

I... I think I prefer naked streetfighters over cruisers.

I'm sorry, please don't hate me now!

I won't, I never wear clothes when I fight in the streets.

It's alright, I prefer naked streetfighters over cruisers too. Doesn't mean I dislike cruisers or any other type of bike, but streetfighters are my favorite. Does that make us weird?

That said, I'm getting a career starter loan that is provided for new officers to help set us up in the "officer lifestyle". It's mostly to help us pay for a decent car and other necessities upon commissioning. It's very low interest (like 2%) and is deferred for a while, so I see it as a good deal. I'm going to use some of it to buy a used Wrangler, as mentioned in the car thread, but I'm going to use the other chunk of the loan to get myself a MOTHER****ING DUCATI! I'm looking at a used 08 or 09 Monster 696. I'm so ****ing psyched. Really right now its just a matter of looking around and finding the right bike.

For those not familiar with the Monster:

Edit: Oh, and some specs on the thing - It only weighs 355lbs, which is going to feel like a feather after riding a cruiser for so long, has 80 Horsepower and 50 ft*lbs of torque. I'm gonna kill myself. Hahaha.

That's what I thought when I bought my Kawi (72bhp, 48ftlbs torque, 12.06s 1/4m acceleration and top speed of 130mph) but I've managed to survive for four weeks now! :p Though there have been one or two hairy moments going into bends too fast/in too high a gear, but luckily the Kawi is a very forgiving bike and from what I hear, fast successions of hairpin bends aren't much of a problem in the States.

Can't say I'm too fond of Ducatis personally, there's something about the looks I just don't like, even when they're naked. But MCN give it a good review (even though some of their stats are a bit off).

MCN also do a good budget naked bikes comparison here. They look at the Monster 696, the ER6n, the Gladius (replaced the SV650) and the XJ6. Quite an interesting watch, although I'm afraid your bike and mine don't fare quite as well as the Gladius.

Well, I have a thing for Ducatis which is a bit more than price and performance. And I do really like the way they look too. I guess it's not for everyone, but whatever.

As far as the specs on MCN, maybe the bike is tuned differently for the UK market? I don't know, but they're way off from what I know for the 696.

And we have plenty of twisties, especially out here in the mountains. I'll upload some mountain rides sometime, we got some awesome riding roads up here in the Rockys. This video is of a mountain road that we have a mere half hour from Albuquerque. Great fun to ride. Unfortunately, ******* drivers doing 35mph on this wonderful road (like at 5 minutes in the video) are a too often occurrence.

Those are some really nice looking roads, though they're much wider, less tight, and better maintained than most UK country roads. I'd love to take my ER6 over there and try them out, I especially love how there's very little traffic on them (other than the slow-moving cars). My favourite new hobby, as a matter of fact, is over-taking stuff. My bike absolutely loves it, I only have to think about overtaking stuff and he immediately starts revving faster. I suddenly realise why I see so many bikers overtaking cars on country roads; the acceleration is just so fantastically massive that if you don't overtake cars, you're practically committing a crime. Got upto 80pmh on a stretch of country road here today (before I had to slow for a bend), I'm going to try and push it to 90 tomorrow. Of course, I could quite easily just get on the motorway and do it, but I hate those. Stupid cross-winds.  -__-

Have you prepared yourself for how different the riding position will be on the Monster compared to cruisers? You might find long-distance riding to be a little more uncomfortable.  Also, I would recommend All The Gear, All The Time. When I was out on my little 125 cruiser I would often just wear standard jeans instead of my leathers, because it had a top speed of like.... 65 and the seat was only like 2 inches off the ground. Now, even if I'm just going out for 5 minutes, I kit up fully, because I can fall from much higher at a much faster speed (although to be fair, I fully anticipate falling off at very slow speeds, owing to shortness of legs. Staying upright at speed is the easy part).

I will say that road is pretty nice, but that's because it's very commonly traveled. I will also say though that it probably seems wider due to the camera being low to the ground. There's many other roads that are just as twisty and pretty narrow and unkempt as well which go between all the small towns around here. The reason there doesn't seem to be much traffic in that video is probably because they went to the top of the road before sunrise and came down it in the morning, while everyone else was driving up.

I used to have a '82 Yamaha Maxim 650 which is what I learned on, which has a very similar riding position to many streetfighters, I'm actually more comfortable with the upright position than sitting back on a cruiser. I always wear my riding jacket all leather with armor inserts at the shoulders, elbows and back; all leather gloves with hard plastic knuckles; leather combat boots; and a full faced helmet. I don't have any riding pants though. I always wear the gear I do though because of an accident I had at 65mph last summer. Fortunately I had my jacket and helmet on, but I ****ed up my hands, ankles and knees due to wearing cotton work pants, sneakers and no gloves. I found some interesting riding jeans which are made double thick and have extra padding along the side of the leg and butt, and armor inserts at the knees.

Ouch, sounds like a nasty accident alright. You always see kids whizzing about on scooters and 125s here wearing nothing but tracksuit pants, trainers and t-shirts (with helmets, naturally), I think they're insane. I rarely see anybody on anything bigger than a 250cc without full kit on, mostly because by the time people have progressed to bigger bikes they've either come off and been injured and learnt the hard way, or wised up enough to realise they can be seriously hurt. I've heard lots of good things about Draggin' Jeans, but I'm a bit paranoid and would probably feel naked in anything less than leather.

They also tend to be a bit expensive:  http://www.dragginjeans.net/product%20range/mens

Whatcha gonna do with the Monster when you have to go away soldierin'? She might not like being locked away for long periods! You'll have to post some feedback of your test rides, whenever you get chance, all I've seen of them review-wise tends to be mostly positive but I've never heard a first-hand account.

Draggin' Jeans, that's what I was looking at. Thanks for getting that website to me, I may try out a pair some time. Sure, $250-300 for pants is pretty high, but that's around the same price you'd get for synthetic riding pants, which I'd wager don't protect as well as the jean's denim/kevlar blend. Plus those jeans have the added benefit of being able to wear around without having to put something over them.

Sadly I'll have to lock it up in a storage unit while I'm gone. This isn't the good ole days when you used to be able to sneak a motorcycle on your ship. I'll definitely post a review of the bike once I get it. I'm still waiting about half a month until I can get the funds, so here's to waiting.

Hey, that's half a month for you to do some test-rides, though. See if you can find a dealership who'll let you take one of their test models out for a ride. Then you'll have a good benchmark to assess second hand machines when you start looking for one.
