The point where our species diverged into two sexes did not happen when we wee mammals, and likely didn't happen when we were in the aquatic stages. It would have likely occured when we resembled the lower end of organisms namely the higher end of protists or the annelids or some such organism. We know that these two organisms prior to evolving over the course of a few million years cloned themselves via polyps and eggs for some of the oligochaeta.
We know that the X and Y chromosomes which are responsible for gender is to have likely diverged from the same chromosome. Moreover the earliest recording of the Y genome came about 300 million years ago, and the system of determining sex through these two gene didn't come around until 166 million years ago. I think it's safe to say that in terms of simplicity the xx chromosome has a much higher rate to come about first rather than the complicated XY chromosome.

But just a hint: did you know that theoretically you can clone a female from a male, but not a male from a female?

Before you all start talking about sex, you all really should define sex.  Got a working one?  Because sex biologists don't at the moment.  There's genotypic (XX, XY) sex, but that's got problems, since its very easy to be a functioning male with XX or vice versa.  There's the effect of the SRY gene, but again, depending on some hormonal influences, that isn't infallible.  Then there are the whole range of people who have something like a function vagina, XY, and undescended testes.  Define your sexes and then this gets easier.
