Sergeant Knight
so what were the top ten songs for those knights and squires to listen to?

I'll start with this little offering at number 10

it's Militia and the Spearmen with "Don't Levy Me This Way" (which in 723 years will see chart action again with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes)

There is only one authentic 11th century song in the mod, that's the Polish Bogurodzica (it was sort of a national anthem and was sung well into the 14th century).

I'd like to see more authentic music

This is a tongue in cheek post, but give me REAL music!

He's got some pretty neat stuff, and I believe you can use his music freely as long as you aren't making cashmoney from it

yes, the original post if tongue in cheek

I know what the music would have been like in medieval Europe (my mum loves medieval muic and has a huge collection from ealry plainchant to renaissance madrigals.

Thisor This would be more appropriate music for 1257

This track is a medieval drum dance typical of the 13th century in western Europe:

Hope it helps.

This is a song by Thibault of champagne (died in 1253) about the call to crusade. It's in old french (even the accent is accurate) and basically say that the ones taking the cross of Outremer are good and the ones who don't are scum.

How about some Tuvan throatsinging for the Golden Horde?  I have no idea if the Mongols practiced throatsinging in the 1200's, but here's an example of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxTJ-Lv31ew

You'll find lots of throat singing if you go to Eastern Europe (that is in the mod not in real life)

"Heiemo og Nykkjen" ( Norwegian folk song from the Middle-Ages ) :

Awesome finds Skandinav. My bet is that most of them (except that 1200 thing from the orkneys and maybe Regin smiður (not the lyrics though) are from a bit later, like 1500, or maybe even 1700 (Hardingfele isn't that old)... but judging from the sound, it all works for the mod.

I have, however, been toying with the idea of finding Rolandskvadet in Old Norse. One of the Norwegian kings, I think it was Hákon V, had lots of the european knightly literature, such as Tristram and Isönd translated into Norwegian. I know Rolandskvadet was one of those, but we can't have the modern norwegian version.

Alright, it appears Le Chanson de Roland was translated as part of Karlamagnús saga og kappar hans. It's purely prose though.

Olafur Liljurós is an icelandic medieval folk song. It's from the ca 1500 though, but apparently, icelandic folk music is very representative of a style that's been lost in the other nordic countries (from wikipedia), and is probably completely representative of the period.

I found this though...

http://www.vocesthules.is/

probably the most serious "medieval music group" ever... I'm just gonna say: wow.....

Voces Thules are impressive, indeed, very beautiful music. I've mostly been listening to Norwegian folk but I see a new world of Icelandic open up to me.

I don't know how you rip the music from the sites othr, but if you have problems downloading from here http://www.gogoyoko.com/#/artist/vocesthules, there are many of their songs on Youtube.

And yes, my guess is also that most of the Norwegian middelalderballader I've posted are from the late Middle-Ages as such usually are.
