Sergeant at Arms
I'd like to think of myself as a decent googler. I can read wikipedia as well as anybody, but nothing seems to explain exactly what xfire does.

Why would I want it? As far as I can tell, it's just another IM program that has shortcuts to games in it. However, I've seen it mentioned around the forum, and I can't help but think there must be some benefit.

Would anyone mind explaining to me what its purpose is?

i don't use xfire but i would imagine it's somewhat similar to steam, chat to friends during game, update games via the program, easy access to games etc, i could be wrong though...

Lets you chat in-game, take screenshots, record videos, live stream of you playing and so forth.

Here's my Xfire profile for example:

Mainly for chatting in game. Arch uses it, he'd probably know more. I just use it to talk with my buddy and get around the ridiculously bad Total War chat system.

For chatting I use steam, but Xfire is great if you wanna upload videos, because atleast for me it takes a century to upload anything to Youtube.

It's more than just an IM Client. It also has auto-patching, VOIP support, usual screenshot/video options (as yet it's the only client of it's type to support live feeds too), in game browser, file transfer (via ftp or P2P) and similar, in a client that takes up a mere 8kb of ram to run.

Also clocks up the hours you spent playing and makes you feel guilty about it.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Is it freeware or what? On their homepage they have places to download Dragon Age and stuff. Is it legal or what?

X Fire is freeware. The fact that the Dragon Age download is under a list titled "Game Store" with an icon of a shopping trolley should give you some idea as to it's legality

I know, what douchebags. Not only do they provide illegal stuff, they charge people for it!

Hmm... I dunno. I've always been a fan of those working the oldest profession.

(Surgeon, because God took a rib from Eve! *Badum tisssss*)

There's nothing illegal about it. It's the latest DLC from Bioware, order Dragon Age between now and Christmas and you get a unique item - Shopping Trolley - to use in the game.

"Shopping Trolley - collects all the random tat from previous DLC's and allows you to dump it in a river near Lothering. Also adds a unique quest with an estimated 4 hour completion time involving your party's attempts to regain the 1 gold coin from the trolley lock mechanism"

I used to use xfire all the time but then stopped when I reformatted and didn't reinstall. It is a pretty useful tool, though. I think I'll use it again.

I can't believe I had a couple of seconds thinking you were serious.

Xfire's live broadcasting option is pretty nifty. I've been using it to play co-op Total War campaigns with my buddy.

What happened to the x-fire thread anyways? I need to add more people on it as I almost always use steam chat now but I'd like to use x-fire more often (or at all) too. Besides logging game hours and screenshots.

The X Fire thread is in the Other Games board. There's 71 members of the M&B community, they should be automagically added to your list when you sign in, since you're a member.
