Xbox 360 Driver Problems

I'm about to rip my hair out.

So about 2 weeks ago my 360 controller (on PC, windows 10) started cutting out randomly, and then about a week ago it stopped working entirely. After looking around a bit it seemed that it shouldn't be a driver issue since its included and updated on windows 10 automatically. So I assumed it was broken and bought a new one. New one arrived a few hours ago and the same ****ing problem.

After plugging in the green light flashes for a second then stops and I get the "USB device not recognized" popup. I've tried updating the driver but its near impossible to get hold of online by the looks of it. And noone else seems to have the same problem, on windows 10 at least.

Anyone got any ideas?

Tried everything suggested in this thread on TenForums? Also, wired/wireless? If wired, is it a data cable or just charging cable? Tried other USB ports? Possible to test on an actual 360 to make sure the controllers themselves are ok?

Its a data cable. I've tried that yeah, though before I uninstalled the xbox 360 peripherals hoping it would reinstall, but now its just gone. Other usb ports dont work, but other usb devices work fine. Phone, usb stick, webcam ect.

Just strange how it stopped working one day, a good month or two after upgrading to windows 10.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him albeit while trying to get a PS3 -> 360 driver working. I'll send him here.

Also of note: Win10 still sucks. Go back to 7.

It's been a little while since it happened, and it could have been related to something different as I was using a PS3 controller with an emulator (for Dark Souls), but I managed to get it fixed after a little screwing around. Not entirely sure as to what the cause was, but I'll put money on a windows update as they tend to cause most of my issues these days. Windows 10 is a bit of a mess and often causes more problems for me and some of my friends than it should.

Not sure if this will help you (you seem to have done some of the steps I've done, which may be the only steps you can/need do), but it's worth a shot.

Anyway, I unplugged my PS3 controller, removed the emulator and it's associated drivers through the provided installers and then a quick clean up in device manager. Afterwards I did the following:
  • Make sure your controller is not plugged in.
  • Went into Devices and Printers, made sure the controller wasn't a present device (it was for me). Manually 'removed device' from this section via right-click, remove device.
  • Uninstalled the Xbox 360 Accessories 1.2 via control panel, if you have it installed.
  • Went into device manager, universal serial bus drivers and uninstalled the USB driver provided in that section. You may need to have hidden devices shown for this section to show up.
  • Then I found the Xbox 360 Drivers / Peripherals. You'll also need to show hidden devices for this (as you probably already know). It'll have Xbox 360 controller for windows inside. Uninstalled it.
  • Restart your computer.
Once you've logged back in and it's done all of it's jazz, you should be able to plug your controller back in. It'll install the basic drivers provided by the OS. It should work off the bat now, but if that doesn't work, install these Accessories from here: microsoft.com, had to use the Windows 7 64bit version, which has been working fine for me.

Basically, you have to wipe anything to do with you controller off your PC otherwise when it comes to reinstalling the drivers, it won't do it properly (at least that was my case). Hopefully that might be of some help - it fixed my issues.

Alright I'm at the USB driver bit, but there's a load of options, which one(s) am I deleting?

Doesn't look like you have anything relating to your Xbox controller in that section - you'll want to show hidden devices  and check the USB devices instead of controllers if you have it. I do, but it could be related to me using a PS3 controller instead of an Xbox controller. Mind you, I've got the Xbox Peripherals and all that installed, so I'll have some extras. Actually, I'm guessing you've already got hidden devices shown, so looks like you don't have it, probably due to uninstalling the Peripherals or whatever (which is fine if that is the case).

The issue is weird. There may be something I'm forgetting, because I spent a good few hours during the early hours of the morning trying to fix this. When things started to work again, I threw myself into bed and hadn't thought about it since.

Oh, there is one other thing; when you have your Xbox controller plugged in, and you head over to Devices and Printers, is the controller there? Afaik it should be there, and if it is, have you tried right-clicking it, going into game controller settings, properties and then checking if it works through there? It probably won't, but it's worth a shot nonetheless.

The Windows 7 64bit drivers work for me, so if you haven't tried them yet (the accessories link I gave in my last post, drivers are apparently bundled in) then that may work. If it doesn't, then you can uninstall it thereafter, if you haven't tried already. Uhg, this isn't a huge amount of help - it's entirely possible you've got a different issue to what I had due to different hardware.

Thanks man, but none of that worked.

Its really bizarre, there just doesn't seem to be a fix online. I refuse to believe that I'm the only one with this problem.  :???:

Thanks for your help though.

There's always the nuclear option. Reinstall Windows!

When you plug in your controller it works for how long? What do you have to do to make it work again?

Think reinstalling windows would cause any problems?

The first controller went through a phase of 15 minutes working, 30 seconds broken. On loop. But now doesnt work at all, not even an error message.

The second controller (which it turns out isn't actually an Xbox product, might have to claim refund there) flashes green for a second and then pops up with the "USB device not recognized" error.

Reinstalling Windows is pretty much the catch-all solution to all your problems, ever. If it doesn't fix your problem, your problem is not fixable*.

USB device not recognized usually shows up when there is no driver for the device, which could be because you uninstalled the Xbox 360 peripherals or whatever it was that came with. This should be solved by installing Xbox 360 accessories for Windows 7, since that would perform the same functions as the stuff that comes with Windows 10 by default.

Windows will try to find a default driver for this device, which will not work because 360 controllers have no default driver (like a keyboard or mouse). Try looking for the unrecognized device in the device manager and going into its properties and uninstalling the driver for it. This should force Windows into retrying to find the right driver.

To summarize: a potential solution would involved connecting your device, uninstalling its driver from the device manager, shut down your PC, unplug the device, install Xbox 360 accessories for Windows 7, restart your computer, and then plug your device in as normal. If it doesn't work then, I would recommend a revert to a functional operating system otherwise known as Windows 7. If you don't want or can't do that, reinstalling Windows 10 should also fix the problem.

So I've tried everything. Think ill have to face the possibility that my first controller has genuinely broken due to heavy use, and the second controller just doesnt work with Windows 10 due to it being a knock-off.

But a silver lining. My five year old knock-off ps3 controller has started working after I installed some software that makes windows recognise all controllers as 360 pads. So now the £10 product from 2011 is outperforming the genuine merchandise  Oh well, It'll do for now.

Thanks for the effort guys, I'll report back if I fix it somehow.

Best solution is a PS4 controller, it has a better shape and works just as well as any officially supported controller with DS4Windows.
