Ok so one of the first games I ever played was the Red Baron for w.e operating system long ago.  I was wondering if there are any more modern equivalent games that anybody could suggest.  Preferably cheap(ish).

Red Ace Squadron is free and a helluva lotta fun.

Yes, Red Ace rocks. I remember trying the first mission several times and failing. I finally finished the mission by dropping a bomb on the last vehicle before I crash.

It is an awful lot of fun. I still play it when I get a chance. The graphics are a little dated, but if you can get past that, it's pretty damn good.

Rise of Flight.

Needs a good pc to run, but it is apparently quite epic. Flight model is very nice according to what I have heard/read.

Simhq review(simply because I trust them far more than IGN to review a flight sim. ):

I will provide an update when I have played the game a bit. With some pros/cons listed. (Hoping it will arrive some point early next week.)

They are hard to find though cause planes were not used for battle until the late war.  They used to take photos of the enemy lines and each other.

WWI and WWII aircraft are where its at. After that it all goes downhill.

WWI has its own charm regarding aircraft, as its as much about just keeping them flying as you manover(without wings falling off) and its often the up close and personal dogfight.

I would say its not so much that as the following:
Flight sims in general are far less frequently made when compared to the past. Furthermore, WWII usually overshadows WWI in entertainment and this is the case with the Flight sim genre as well.

Considering that by 1915 the Fokker(I recall it being the E.I.) arrived with sychornization gear. A period where combat between aircrafts was beginning to occur more frequently.

Yeah Wings of Glory seems like the Red Baron 2.0 really.  The dogfights are the best part about them  and I don't think you get that so much with ww2.  We need more next gen WW1 games.

Well, you could get IL-2,it has some WW1 era planes.I enjoy the rocketpropelled ones more tho

I think IL-2 might be too much for my computer to handle really.  But I've wanted to look inot it for a while now.

Fw190 for life. Well, that or the Bf110, 30mm gifts for the enemy pilots. There is just something magical about watching a spitfire try to turn and burn as you bounce him with 2k of smack and leave him without a wing.

The P38 is excellent as well though, centerline guns are endlessly fun. (Bless the Americans and their love of good engines and firepower.)

Though if you roll with the WWI era planes(or slightly later) in IL2 then you are in deep trouble. Of course you can win, but it requires a)that you are an amazing pilot and/or b)your opponent is a complete and utter failure as a pilot.

IL2 should run on most decent PCs out now. The game is around 8 years old, though I still find the graphics are rather good and the gameplay is very nice.

Regarding WWII flight sims, I would say IL2 and Battleground Europe are amongst the best for online play, BoBII is great but in my eyes less so due to a lack of any multiplayer gaming(co-op, dogfighting, etc). As I find realy players are usually much more fun than the AI employed. All three are by now rather easy on the system requirements as far as I can recall.

For WWI sims its still (sadly) all about Red Baron. Though Over Flanders Fields and Rise of Flight look promising(OFF for singleplayer, RoF for multiplayer)

Really? In which expansion were they included?

I have no expansions,I was talking about that German Jetfighter. What was its name...262 something.

ME-262!Its a epic plane, especially becouse you can fire 50 small rockets with it  I once destroyed 20 Russian bombers alone with that thing!

He is probably refering to the Biplanes in IL2, though they are not WWI aircraft, rather post war biplanes(which were hilariously out of date).
