[WPL2] [NA] Pundits - Weekly Power Rankings

Users who are viewing this thread

Apologies friends, no pundit power rankings were posted for Week 4 because I was away all weekend.

Definitely expect some content posted going into Week 5, with hopefully some more in-depth analysis and insight after some of the significant match-ups we've seen in Week 3 and will be seeing in Week 4.

Week 5 Power Rankings

1. One Eyed

Not much has changed over the past two weeks with OE.  They have played and beaten two teams (FFOH and FRaTs) that they should beat to remain as the top team In WPL2.

OE's additions to their team before WPL2--Deathangel, SotaMursu, Can, Gorlock, and Insane--have all made contributions in turning OE from an infantry heavy lineup to one of they most balanced teams in NA. A surprise so far has been the top notch cav play from Gorlock, who has shown
a lot of growth over the course of this tournament. Relatively unknown coming in, he has shown he can be an impact player, clutching some rounds and turning the tides of others with some timely kills. It seems the development of Gorlock can partially attributed to Can. Can's experience at cav and drive to improve may have rubbed off on Gorlock as the two practice together.

The archers of OE have improved as well. DeathAngel and Matt are two archers that were talented but in my personal opinion streaky. They both seem to have found some consistency in their game, having very few matches where they go quiet. Like Can with Gorlock, the addition of SotaMursu most likely helped these two out, as he is an accomplished archer and a really good teacher. He could have easily passed on some of his knowledge to DeathAngel and Matt. OE will look to keep their undefeated season alive this week when they go up against tK.  It will be one of their toughest tests in WPL2, should be a great match.

2. West Knights

In the last two weeks, wK found itself competing against the teams FailRats, and RW.

Faced with RW in week four, wK finished out the match, with a whopping 12-1 victory. However, this game ended somewhat abnormally. After taking the closed map by a wide margin of six to one, wK grabbed a final round win on the open, before tragedy struck. Early in the third round, the server fell to DDoS attack. Following this unfortunate incident, Maccle called off the scrim, handing the last five rounds to wK. In conclusion wK won a quick victory, and earned some free rounds in the meantime. Despite the results of the match, the two teams saw no change in their power rankings, with wK in second, and RW, fifth. Regarding the DDoS attacks, I foresee an imminent collapse in all multiplayer activities, due to the diligent work of various trench-coat-warriors. My only hope for the future, is that the notorious T.R.U.M.P. can bring an end to the masterful hackers who plague our servers.

On a separate note, FR proved itself something of a close opponent to wK. This week three matchup ended in a nine to seven victory for wK. The game began on an open map, the classic Field by The River. wK and FR both entered, missing key players, Achilles and Cdjrxx respectively. wK was able to fill the gap, with the elusive, yet effective, RobertBruce. In an odd twist, wK was the team that started out with a standard 4-2-2 lineup, while FR elected to bring no infantry at all. At least until a sweep on the first round prompted them to change things up. When the open map concluded, each team had won a set, both with a score of three to one. In those eight rounds, wK saw a strong performance by Kelquethas, who split between cavalry and infantry. As well, Cradoc showed up on the second set, alongside Lagstro, who pulled in an impressive 7-1 KD. Entering the closed map with a stalemate, wK started off with the intent of stealing a victory. And that is what they did, after some impressive plays by RobertBruce, Lagstro, Cru, and Kelquethas spread out over the two sets. However, their win was not absolute, with only a slight abundance of rounds allowing them to tank a loss on the final set. In my opinion, this was wK’s game to lose, and a loss ended up being not too far out of the realm of possibility. One might say that the absence of Achilles could have attributed to this, but I feel that RobertBruce adequately made up for this disparity. What I did see, was wK losing rounds when it's archers were pressured, or simply not performing. This highlighted the importance, but also potential fragility of wK’s archer squad. To back up this statement, I’d point out the simple fact that Lagstro and RobertBruce effortlessly topped the boards when wK won sets, but were mid, to low, on the scoreboard during lost sets. Like their week four match, this victory didn’t move wK around the power rankings. Looking back at how FR stole the third place spot from tK briefly, this match may have solidified wK’s spot in the top three, and ensured that no team outside of the top three can challenge them. Right now, it seems like wK only has to worry about tK or OE. In the end though, only time will tell.

3. 9792e Regiment

After losing to Failed RaTs in the biggest upset of the tournament so far in Week 2, and giving up more rounds to Rynwulf than most would have expected in Week 3, tK were looking a bit shakey after having come into the tournaments as one of the top three teams favoured to take the championship.

However in Week 4 tK chose OLD again as their opponents (after having already beaten them 11-3 in Week 1) and promptly smashed them with a final score of 12-2, with OLD's only rounds won on the very last set. An incredibly dominant closed map performance from tK's infantry and ranged players (mainly Tito, Sigi, and Jeffrey9792) proved their reputation for top notch closed map play is by no means baseless. Their open map performance too proved to be too much for OLD, with particularly strong showings from Thunderbeu and Aporta.

A strong win against an already proven to be lesser team is by no means bad for tK, but it doesn't exactly shoot them up the power rankings either; They definitely still have something to prove after the upset during Week 2. Going into Week 5 we have probably the most exciting match up of the tournament so far with tK going up against top contenders OE. The outcome of their meeting will prove either that OE stands strong above the rest of the teams, or that tK's Week 2 loss was nothing more than a bump in their road to the championship.

4. Failed RaTs

These past two weeks challenged FailRats, with matches against two of the top three teams. Week three matched them with wK, followed by OE in week four. Missing their key infantry player Cdjrxx, for both matches, only served to increase the difficulty. At the conclusion of those two, challenging weeks, FR left with two losses. But, considering the matchups, this may not have been too bad for FR.

Against OE, FR lost 12-3. Despite the difference in score, FR saw some solid individual achievements from their cav players on the open map. Afterwards, Nevino owned up to his team's loss, claiming they are capable of much more. Also stating that they have lots of practice ahead of them. And the North American scene could benefit from any extra competition it can get. Based on recent play, it seems like FR has some possibility of breaking into the top three, however slight. Although, if FR’s lineup wants this to happen, they will definitely have to push themselves by putting in the hours, and keeping open minds in order to improve.

Looking at their faceup with wK, it's easy to tell that FR faired much better there. While the match didn't go in FRs favor, they only lost slightly, with the final score being 9-7. Bubs and Alenjabro pulled off some impressive plays that kept them in the races, and strong playing by the archer duo John and Zealots directly won many rounds. As well, after officially losing the match, FR still put up quite a fight, winning the last set despite the fact that the game was technically over. Having the drive to do this, is important for teams, especially those who are determined to step their game up to a higher level of play. Looking at the overall playstyle of FR, it looks like solid cavalry play won them the first set, but a lack of it, lost them the second set. Bubs, Alejanbro, Nevino, and Stone, made a strong showing to win the first set. But a lack of kills on their part, in the second set, was the driving factor for that loss. When it came to the closed map, the diminished effectiveness of cavalry seemingly cause FR to slip, but they did put up something of a fight. The lack of their best infantry player undoubtedly had a negative impact as well. Based on this evidence it can be determined that FR’s lineup is too unbalanced. Too many cavalry players means that their closed map game is nowhere near their skill on the open. How Nevino will drum up the infantry talent required to compete effectively on closed maps, I don’t know. What I do know, is that this stage of the tournament is soon to come to a close, and FR might be running out of time to patch the holes in their roster.

5. Rynwulf

Despite a one-sided loss to West Knights this past week, RW have been looking very much solid with a decent showing against 3rd ranked 9792e Regiment in Week 3 and a closer-than-expected but still strong 11-8 victory over TSC in Week 2.

In Week 3 against tK, Red, Aelia and Tyler really stepped up and brought the match to a close 4-3 lead for tK at the half. However Tito and Thunderbeu made sure RW got no closer than that on the closed map, wrapping up the match with a 10-4 final score. RW showed that they can compete with the top teams, but don't seem to have a real team forte upon which to draw, like the rest of the top 5 teams do. They came up short against tK once the fight was brought to tK's home turf (closed map), and yet struggled against a weaker TSC on both open and closed maps in Week 2.

Week 5 will bring us an awaited match between Rynwulf and probably their closest rivals in the tournament, OLD. The contest will decide which team can hang on to the 5th power ranking and hopefully provide more challenge for the top 4 teams in the weeks to come.
