Mage246

I just looked at the smithy... Reinforced Black Armor costs 21k denars. That's right, 21000 denars.... That's more money that I think that I will *ever* have  Then again I'm not one of those guys who plays until level 50

Whoa... I just found one of the first things I'm using the mod tools for, after I get through trying to use them to edit the arena a bit.

looks like the thick and reinforced modifiers increase the price a lot more than before. i think the same was done to the weapons.

All the best improvement mods to items seem to be waaaaaaaay over priced.

It costs over 5,000 just for a spirited hunter, when a regular hunter only costs around 700 :???:

'Balanced' weapons are like it, too. 6,000+ for a balanced sword of war, anyone?
Might as well just get a normal sword of war. Not quite a good, but MUCH cheaper!

I take it that armagon didn't mean to raise the prices of these items by quite this much. It's now just pointless in trying to save up for these things!

I actually prefer it this way.

The extreme that it takes it is a little more than I would have went for ( ) ... but I like it nontheless.

Anyone can buy a Hunter horse ... but you have to save for that extra goodness you get from a 'spirited' one.

Narcissus

True, but I don't think I've EVER saved up that much before!!!

I think it would be more reasonable if 'spirited' horses cost twice as much as the normal version. Call me odd, but sprited horses costing 7x more is a bit ridiculous. Especially considering the only benifits a spirited horse will give you is a single extra point of manueverability and speed!

And then what happens when you have just bought yourself a spirited hunter, only for it to get crippled in your very 1st fight. 5 grand(!!!) down the drain! That horse is now practically worthless! :???: Even once it has healed!

Yeah, with these new prices, horses should retain their bonuses after they heal. The fact is your income amount given time doesn't increase much beyond level 20 or so. And thus, simply increasing prices so that it takes 10 hours of play just to buy a spirited courser doesn't really increase the longevity of the game IMO. It just removes the incentive to save for items with good modifiers, since you'll probably never be able to afford them unless you play religiously, and even if you do get them there isn't a noticable difference between that and standard anyway. 21k for reinforced black? What's the point, it almost might as well be removed from the game, especially when considering how it is only a tiny bit better than standard black. You're going spend a dozen hours just to gain +2 to defense? :???: Furthermore, it seems that it was mainly the spirited horses that had their prices increased to unaffordable levels. But the thing is, i always though that heavy and spirited were intended to be about equal, one with emphasis on speed, the other on raw power. Not so anymore... If you want to increase the games longevity with emphasis on items, then make them even cheaper than they were before, but have them degrade so they will eventually always need replacing. Sorry for being critical of your hard work armagan, i like 99% of the changes you make...this just isn't one of them...

Yeah I don't think this was a good way to implement a money sink, and here's why:

It doesn't increase a players enjoyment of the game, nor does it improve the players playing experience. Having slightly better armor does not impact your ability to fight by enough that you will be desperate to have godly armor, it just makes things slightly easier, which is why they should be slightly *not massively* harder to get.

The way that money sinks work in most other games is that the money you spend enables you to do things you couldn't do before, like access new areas, defeat previously unbeatable enemies, play fun mini-games, or develop your character/storyline more. Money sinks that don't work, IMO, are those which force the player into repetitive and ultimately unenjoyable actions, since it discourages everyone but the truly hardcore to even bother. A money sink has to improve the fun of the game, not become an aggravation for those to whom a tiny bonus has little meaning. This is especially true since this is a SP game and there is no one to show off/compete with. Some people have tried to compete over ranged shot difficulty or playing unique and more difficult variants, but this type of play does not appeal to most people, and this isn't a money sink kind of thing anyway.

Just my two cents on what a money sink should be.

I don't think this was implemented as a money sink, per se. I think it just outlines the difference between good and 'the best'.

I really like a major price disparity between the two, but I think that the extreme that it was done in was a bit much.

Narcissus

I'm with Narcissus here.

Earlier, it was too easy to get the good stuff. People often ended with too much money as they went along and the value of currency became a non-issue. Now at least, making money and saving your denars is meaningful.

Also, since 0.700, I'm finding trading to be a worthwhile pursuit and much needed to increase your funds.

IMHO, if u want to distinguish b/w good and the very best, shouldn't u make the item less available but not as expensive as now? I'd like to see the reinforced and sprited items or horses keep to the value of 7.03 but appear much rarer in the merchants. It doesn't say much about the uniqueness of something if they're seen in 2 or 3's in every other shop even if they cost 10 hours's playing time i think.

Well I really like the change in some ways, because now many of the intermediate items become worth buying, and theres a much wider selection of items and prices that I'm looking at. But trading items with Marnid and Borcha has become more of a problem now.

Hmm.. What if you spend everything on spirited chargers before updating to 0.704 and then sell them in the updated version?

It seems that only Spirited for horses and reinforced for armour are the big drainers.
Heavy horses are only slightly more expensive than normal horses, and thick equipment is also more reasonable (though still a good deal more expensive).

I think that a 21,000k suit of the best armor in the game IS REASONABLE. Here's why:

1. Any plate type armor would have to be custom-made for the wearer. You couldn't just pick up a piece of armor from the battlefield and expect it to fit you. It would be like going to the clothes store and randomly picking out a shirt without checking the size and expecting it to fit.

2. Reinforced armor, I would assume, is the best of the best metal out there. So you can't just take any metal and make an armor, you gotta take THE BEST. Apply this to point #1 above and $21k sounds about right.

Weapons are a different story, as point 1 is not applicable. This is reflected in the fact that weapons cost less than armor, so this is good. Again, the best of the best steel should cost a premium.

This philosophy also applies to warhorses and chargers, as the barding must be custom made for the horse.

I don't agree with the rest of the horse pricing though. A spirited horse should not cost 7x more than its regular counterpart if the speed difference is only 1 point. Go to Kentucky for the Breeder's Cup and you'll see that your "spirited" thoroghbreds (ones that compete in stakes races) do cost 10x more, but they are also MUCH faster than your runofthemill horse.

In terms of gameplay, I agree with Mage246. In the suspension of disbelief that is a video game, enjoyment usurps relativity. But the question one must ask... is it REALLY life or death between regular black armor and reinforced? The 1 or 2 point difference I don't think is a make or break thing.
