Worst loss/Best win

I am reviving some of the threads that I remember from last year. so... why not kill two birds with one stone?

We have all had some terrible losses, or wins against overwhelming odds. Why not post them? How about the time a Huscarl threw that axe over a hill into your face? Or the other time when you get killed by a rock against the last enemy? We all have em. So post  what happened to you.

I think my most heroic battle was at thir, it was a series of about 8 sieges, I had 250 men, and after the attacks ended I had killed around 4000 enemy troops losing 180 or so I crushed a 3 nations army

While it wasn't necessarily heroic, one of my best battles was when we took Tihr during my conquest of the Nords. It was their last city and I was expecting fierce resistance (a few in-game months earlier I had taken Sargoth in what was at the time the most costly battle I've ever had), so I brought along my company of Nord Huscarls to assist my fellow vassals in the assault.

The battle lasted only 10 minutes or so and while we had several wounded, we only had one fatality; a poor little looter.

Turns out most of the enemy lords were still gathering troops to replenish those lost from our siege at Sargoth and for some reason Jarl Aedin had stocked Tihr with mostly low tier troops. Jeremus' level 8 surgery skill obviously helped keep our fatality rate low too.

If this is limited to Warband (and not including old M&B)...

Best: During one siege -- and I can't even remember which castle (Vaegir, I believe) -- I felt like a Big Damn Hero. One of the first up the ladder, managed to survive the onslaught of arrows and javelins, hacked my way through the enemy archers to make the ladder safe for reinforcements, then proceeded to attack and fall back with the crowd of Swadians in a rhythm that just happened to work perfectly. I'd love to say it was planned, or due to some kind of skill, but not really.

I've got a screenshot of the end of the battle where my character's sword-arm is crimson up to the elbow, he's badly wounded, his face is blood-stained, he's got a confiscated shield on his back, and the reinforced knightly heater shield in his hand is on the verge of falling apart... with about a dozen arrows and one big honkin' javelin sticking out of it.

A few game months later one of the damned Rhodok lords is laying waste to my little village of Iyindah. I march in to stop him... and perhaps as much as fifteen freakin' seconds into the battle, just as I've finished getting my cavalry to dismount and given my troops their positioning orders... just as the first Rhodok infantry wave is charging in... a goddamned Sharpshooter manages to headshot me. Reinforced knightly heater shield, thick bascinet with aventail, shield skill 5.  Boom. Down in one hit. From far enough away that I couldn't even see where he was -- which means he also somehow managed to shoot through the crowd around me and very possibly his own men as they charged.

So. Bitter. ****ing Rhodok sharpshooters.

I had my best victory last night.  I was sieging Dhirm to start my own independant kingdom.  It was held by the Nords and they had a garrison of about 400, versus my 120.  I initially didn't think I would have a problem, as my 120 were all top tier troops...but I didn't count on them also having 40+ huscarls and top tier archers.  The initial sally went pretty well, I took more injuries than I expected, but still didn't quite "get" what I was in for.  During the siege, as the tower moved forward, we continued to do well, I was getting head shot after head shot with my bow, my troops didn't seem to be taking that many hits.  Then when the tower was in place and my troops moved in...it became a red text nightmare of "...killed by huscarl".  Eventually my troops made enough headway to move on to the city wall, and I kept running to grab arrows and making head shots.  Eventually I couldn't find any more arrows, so I dropped down to get behind enemy lines and started attacking with bastard sword in both hands.  The battle continued, but then I noticed that my troops were getting low, so I ordered the few left to follow me and found an area to make a last stand.  Myself, Alayen, and Jeremus along with 3 hired blades against a tide of Nords.  We were able to bottle neck the enemy so we only had to fight a few at a time, but the Nord infantry are fast and strong.  We continued to fight and fight, one by one my allies dropped, but the Nord horde continued.  But in the end, we stood triumphant!  Myself and Jeremus were the only ones still standing.

That's epic.

I love Huscarls when I'm playing a Nord. Hate 'em when I'm not. Sending your soldiers into a fortification that's guarded by a significant number of huscarls is like feeding them into a freakin' meat-grinder.

It was kind of funny that Jeremus was the only soldier still standing, other than myself.  He is literally the worst soldier I had in my army.  I have him using a spear and shield combo and a crossbow, but his skills are just only over 100.  And he is dead last on the list of what troops enter battle, which I imagine is the main reason he survived.  No big surprise Alayan lasted a long time, his sword skill is over 200 and he has great gear, and the hired blades are both tough and near the last to enter battle.

Stroke of luck that Jeremus stayed standing, too... otherwise the number of deaths taken could have been brutal. There have been times where I've got him at the bottom of a list of 70+ soldiers, and he still appears in the first wave only to get dropped. Leading to massive casualties on my side, of course.  I can only imagine the medic takes a beating after doing things that stupid.

worst loss? that one time 5 looters knocked my newly started character with 2 rocks to the head... at the same time.
it was pretty amazing to see looters deal 20-30 damage twice in a row. and i dont think my damage settings were even at hardest

My best victory (favourite one at that) is last night I had a party of a couple of nord trained footman and a few sarrinand recruits I beat my first force of desert bandits EVER! it just rocked for me because I've always stayed out of the desert for that very reason but now, I'm gonna kill them all.

I don't know if I could even do a worst lost, I've lost so many times...often due to something dumb.  I  accidentally threw my sword down in a fight and then got killed.  I've been killed by the tavern drunk, that guy has a good amount of hit points...I've made several attempts at heroics, like jumping behind enemy lines in sieges that have led to a deserved loss.  Not sure which one was worse though.

It's Warband and regular.

My best win (Was on regular M&B) was when I was defending a town. I had just started the game the day before, and had little experience in the game. I was fighting Harlaus, with a force of 50 men. They were all nords. I got placed in the middle of a valley. (BEST MAP EVER ) I put my warriors at the foot and put archers in the back. As the enemies nearing were cut down by the archers, they were beat up by the warriors and farmers at the foot of the valley. I won with 13 losses

My worst loss came defending Dhirim with a garrison of about 100 Khergit Lancers and Veteran Horse Archers, against a Nord marshal with 500+ troops. Between shooting arrows from the sides and overhead chops at the top of the ladder, I think I had at least 100 kills in the battle, but my forces were gradually whittled down to myself and a couple Lancers fighting against about 10 Nord Huscarls and Veterans on the wall in front of the ladder. The Lancers went down and I had almost no health left, but I managed to kill all but one Huscarl by retreating and overhead chopping. Then, as I was engaging the last enemy I stepped backwards off the edge of the wall and knocked myself unconscious. The enemy lost about 400 men, but every one of my men was killed or wounded. We lost Dhirim and I was taken prisoner.

Best win was an early game (I think I was level 12) ambush by a band of 40 deserter Khergit Lancers, when I had weak companions and about 20 Khergit Skirmishers/Tribesmen. I realized I couldn't run from them and I was role-playing a Khergit warlord, so I equipped my lance, Spirited Courser and 2 bags of arrows. I was alone after about 2 minutes and spent the next 20 minutes or so running and firing arrows until there were no more enemies left on horseback, then very carefully couching all the enemies on foot. Not particularly epic in the grand scale of things, but very, very satisfying.

OKok, by admitting this you can not laugh. My 2 worse losses....My very first battle against the bandit in the first city you start in with my first character.

The second...well lets just say a enemy army of 3000 (2000 peasants other 100 mixed) tromps me and 5 elite companions and a force of roughly 800. I did not take into account that about 2000 rocks can break your shield if you have only 1 shield point invested. Since then now i put roughly 3-5. But in my defense that particular character was a bastard sword user who primarily used the 2h option.

Worst losses? Countless encounters with looters. And of course with the cursed steppe bandits. They make the life of my Shieldless Swordbiters a hell! Worst of all: my heavily armed char beaten by 5 looters, losing my weapons and clothes...
(in regular M&B, sometimes with mods. I don't own WB.)

Best win: The sack of Calisia. Anno Domini 1501 in tEatRC: My 34-strong Doppelsoldner company (the 'Victorious Fähnlein') was looting the village, and suddenly a 100-strong Lord's party of the Grand Duchy comes down on me. Total number of enemies (including about 60 peasants): 158.
My all-infantry party cut clean through masses of enemies. It was glorious, although I was too busy kicking ass that I couldn't grab my mace to KO the Peasant women (my common practice during raids, for RP purposes  ): they were slain by my men's Zweihanders. What a waste...

I eagerly await your coronation as Emperor of Caldaria! Dibs on an invite to your feast when that happens pls?
No better feast than a good village raid! I invite you to the pillage of Calisia, with much feastly lights (burning houses), hospital hosts (peasants), lovely ladies (peasant women) and much loot food to appease the guests. And of course the big tournament, in which the Lord of Calisia himself will arrive with his awesome Winged Hussars to offer you a really good fight! The survivors winners will receive a big award in the form of the village's posessions and women.

(Only for tEatRC VIPs)

In old tEatRC, I modded the Doppelsoldner texture so that there was a leather buffcoat under the plate, covering the legs and upper shoulders before the poofy cloth arms. I then bought it for my character and all his companions, got them all bascinets, high quality cavalry boots, muskets, schiavona,  and black horses. They became The 1st Imperial Musketeers in service to the Swadian crown. I had a blast with that game!

I mention this because it also brings to mind some of my worst defeats. I don't know what the Hell it was about that mod, but my character was like a damned bullet magnet. I remember the one castle up in the north, as soon as you crossed the bridge into Halmarian land on the coast. I joined three different sieges on that thing... and every bloody one resulted in my character getting taken out mere seconds after the battle loaded. In the very first volley from the ramparts, while I was still tapping keys for troop orders, I'd take a head shot.

Those guns were so inaccurate I was lucky if I could hit someone at close range with 200+ skill... and the damned NPCs kept headshotting me from across the bloody map. Happened in several battles, too... from the mounted Laurian arquebusers, no less! Moving, mounted headshots from across the map.

Worst loss: Besieging a castle (can't remember which one, but the ladders are on the inside of it so you're getting shot at from multiple directions) with about 550 men against a garrison of about 300, with half of those being Vaegir Marksman. The marksman wiped us out before we could even get on the wall.
Best victory: Enemy army of 3000 vs my garrison of 500, including my army. Won the siege then finished them off in the field.

Story of my life in WFaS so far!

This story is in the mod Blood & Steel ( not really important) but it goes like this.

I made my first character join the sarranids and eventually I buttered them up enough that I became a mercenary for them. I was about level 10 when the rhodoks besieged Shariz and I, being the loyal mercenary, went to go help without being asked.

When I got there I found that it was 1600 troops versus about 4000 (the party sizes are larger in this mod.) I figured that I had beaten ratios worse then that in native, so I quickly pushed my way right in front of the ladder. When the first Rhodok troops poured over the ladder I was ready to start slashing. 15 seconds later I'm trying to run into the gatehouse as a barrage of red messages hits the screen.

THE RHODOKS WERE OWNING US!

eventually I was only left with about 3 sarranid archers and I charged out onto the walls. needless to say I was cut down by cleavers, pikes, and hammers all at the same time.

My worst loss wasn't really a loss, but it's too awesome not to mention it.

So I was around level 20 or so, and I was attacking a group of Taiga Bandits.  30+ or so bandits against my force of 90+ including many knights, horsemen, etc.  Basic cleanup duty around one of my cities/experience for my horsemen.

So I charge at the bandits.  I've got shield/1h sword up.  +54/14 plate armor, +21 greaves, +52 helmet, +7 gaunts.  On a steppe charger.  I'm a force to be feared.

I close in and see one of the fur-clad bandits hold up a jarid.  I drop my shield in order to swing and cleave his head from his body.  Worst case scenario he hits me and knocks my swing off it's stride, right?

Boom.

Aino receives 58 points damange
Horse receives 112 points damage
Aino is knocked unconscious by Taiga Bandit.

My eye twitched.

I was the first and only casualty that round.  The rest of my troops mopped up later, but still.  Hilarious.  I really wish I had a screenshot.
