can anyone recommend a good WW1 game id prefare strategy but any is good.

The hoi and eu3 series have a few WW1 mods, or there is a source mod that is a WW1 FPS.

There's the age old classic Red Baron game, if you like some high class (if dated) areal combat. There's also WWI Medic, which is a great time killer.

Also try Darkest Hour, the Hearts of Iron 2 game. It has both WW1 and WW2, although the WW1 scenario is pretty crappy.

Hey, you're right; they released the 16-color version as freeware. I wonder if there's any differences between the GoG version, the free download, and my old CD copy.

Battlefield: 1918 is about the best thing ever.

There's the age old classic Red Baron game, if you like some high class (if dated) areal combat.

Alternatively, there's Rise of Flight, if you like high class but not dated aerial combat. The link is for the free version of the game, which is identical to the full game except that you only have two planes available.

Ah yes, I forgot about that one. While I'm not quite willing to commit to a 4 gigabyte demo, I have to say that it looks pretty nice in the screenshots. I'd probably be more interested if they had more reasonable prices for their planes, but I've never met a game that was worth $100+ and rising.

The demo is four gigabytes because it's the full game, only with two planes. Buy two more for ~15$ and you effectively have the retail version.

There's a WW1 source mod, look up some vids on YT, looks like great fun.

It is a niche game, but a very nice one indeed.

One of the best flight simulators in a long time and a worthy successor(in my view) to the Red Baron series.

I have in the past managed to wait for decent deals to purchase the few planes I value/want.

That reminds me I have to buy a joystick so I can play it. I used to love Red Baron.

Buy an old Saitek X-45 or Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback 2, both are still some of the best joysticks. 

Beyond that CH products or perhaps Thrustmaster(though I still do not trust their ability to make anything that lasts).

The Saitek Avi8tor is quite cheap and not that bad either.
