World On Fire

My name is Joseph Yäklin, and I am currently assigned to the 25 infantry division of the GCC or Global Commonwealth of Countries. My story…everybody’s story, begins on one day. The day the world began to burn.

12/21/2012, 5:34 pm, 212 Privet Dr., Boran, Caspia
My parents were out for their weekly time together, or as I called them “wedding reminders”. My parents were going through tough times. They fought frequently and apologized to each other right after. These reminders were set up to try to stop those fights. Lo’ and behold something did stop these fights. Something stopped a lot of fights.

I wasn’t much of a worldly person. I usually didn’t care for outside events, but one thing had me wondering. I was watching a news bulletin saying that all nukes in the west were unofficially shut down due to a virus. This “virus” had all the nukes on the fritz, meaning all of the nukes of Caspia and the western nations that had them were shut down until a certain system was repaired. My ignorance didn’t connect this with the threats of one certain eastern nation, Jalabad.

Jalabad’s “president”, Al’Ligorin, replaced the former president, Musherin, in a violent coup’de’ta. Ever since Al’Ligorin (or as many people now call him, Ligor) came to power he bragged about his impressive army. Everybody knew, or thought they knew, that his army was out-dated. His air force was partly made up of old Caspian fighters like the AF-15, and Busian fighters. The one thing he told the west that surprised everybody was that he had a full working model of a nuclear missile. Almost nobody believed him. They said that they didn’t have the resources or money to be able to build a missile.

After the news report had finished I decided to play in the backyard. My parents refused to buy any video game systems. It’s not that they thought that video games would corrupt my mind. It was just that they didn’t have the money. I took one of my stick weapons and went outside. As I closed the door I heard a very low rumbling sound. I thought it was just a commercial plane going over, but I was curious to see why it was going over my house. I looked up and all I saw was just this little spec flying over the sky. It must have been a military jet because it was just too high for any normal jet to make even a trace of noise from that high.

I passed it off as a Caspian jet because there was a military base in another county. I kept following the spec and noticed it wasn’t heading toward the military base; it was heading toward the city. I kept following it until the spec was out of sight. Still pondering, I kept looking in the direction it was taking. A few moments later a huge white light blinded me so that I had to turn away and squeeze as hard as I could so that I wouldn’t be permanently blinded from the light.

I ran back into the house, still dazed by the flash. I looked toward the TV, and seeing that it was blazing black and white, went up to my room to see if the radio was working. I turned it on half expecting it to be dead and half expecting it to be blaring a warning. I flipped channels trying to see if anything was on that would tell me what in the world was going on. I don’t know how long it took to find a station that was working. By the time I heard a understandable word it was sunset and a luminous cloud was still in the sky. I heard muffled words at first. “*static*..this is WKFH please if anyb-*static*….lear bom-*long static transmission*….abad…” Finally It was fully understandable. What I remember it went like this.

“This is WKFH please if anybody hears this Caspia has come under a direct nuclear bombing strike. Scarce transmissions from around the world are also saying that Busia, Gopan, Lerkamy, and other countries have also been bombed. We now have a few sources saying that Jalabad is the cause of this. Please if anybody hears this stay inside, place thick materials over you and stay as safe as possible.”

So on that day, December 21, 2012, the world began to burn.
