I'm not racist....honest.... (jokes)
I thought that having a very technologically advanced Japanese culture as an enemy would be very cool, obviously like all mount & Blade games you can choose to be on their side. And im loving the tiger-man, and mercenaries is a good idea i think. The striped terrors

Why are the asian faction bad guys?

Cause we steal American Jobs.

Defending a village against job application attacks just wouldnt feel as noble.

Would be nice to play as them, there just doesnt seem any reason to make them "bad" and you'll need to maybe rethink how advanced they are, as fractions should really balance out against eachother.

I think mercenaries should be more unique and varied, perhaps even more costly then standard troops.

Yeah, you should be able to have tinkers as mercs or something. They move really fast cause of rocket boots, and have rocket launchers, and shoot lasers out of their eyes.

lol^^

I get what you mean Mort and i altered it to fit  and yes mercenaries should play a big part, especially if its going to be a trading game aswell as fighting, for garding cargo ships/caravans etc

Okay, I'll base my artwork off of what you've guys said so far, and a few of my own ideas, as well as incorporating pieces of IYORT's pack, like the molemen. My ideas were really quite similar to Bite Me's (yay ^^).

I have already done some artwork for the imperial faction, because I supposed there would have to be at least one faction like that from the start. for this faction I have normal soldiers done and a soldier with a body-mounted, steam powered, 6 barelled rapid fire gun. I also started on some pictures of airship pirates/troops because I supposed there'd be a faction like that too.

Air Pirates don't look like sea pirates, just in case you drew them to be buccaneers of the skies or something.

They look more like World War I aces, 'cept with more weapons on them.

Very true, but i still really love the tricorned hats!! i would love to use them for the pirates of the skies!!

Don't worry, I'm one step ahead of both of you. Indeed, I've already drawn em', and I've drawn 'em as a cross between sea pirates and WWI aces. The captain has a tricorn hat over a leather pilot cap with goggles, and a long coat. He leans more to the pirate side, while the crewmembers are a little bit more ace-looking. But I can always change 'em around. Fortunately it's all working out.

My ideas for factions-

-The imperial faction (Emperor Victor III), The Victian Empire rules over most of the map, but has abandoned the islands that have been overtaken by The Plague, and has closed off all connections with those areas, with no intents to take them back, let anyone in, or out. Instead, the Emperor shifts his attention to the islands of the minor east, which he seeks to settle to make up for the loss of land. Unfortunately for him, another empire has already planted it's flag on those islands.

-A naval faction (Captain Windtreader), pilots and pirates, and great floating metal cities. There's a world in and above the clouds, a world of freedom... mostly. Captain Windtreader still keeps everything in order- as little order as possible, but enough to do the trick and to still let there be almsot no boundaries. Unfortunately, Emperor Victor is not too happy about this freedom, and so the Imperial Navy is ready to rid the skies of these pests. But Windtreader won't go down without a good fight.

-A undersea faction (Captain Nemo), could be called 'Atlantis'? They rule the seas with great iron beasts that roam the world beneath and on the waves, raiding, attacking, looting. Their spontaneous raiding strategy allows them to build confidence in a merchant that his ship will almost certainly not be attacked- Nemo's people do not continously keep their attacks in one area, but rather come up for raids in random places. Also, rather than constantly plundering and attacking ships, they keep their attacks rare and usually are able to conceal them once they are through, stationing spies in port towns to figure out which vessels to attack next and when, to get the best loot, and to have some time to plan the attack.

-An underground rebellion organization (dunno yet), called 'The Reds'/'People's Party'- a reference to the revolution that siezed much of the late 18th to the early 20th century, as such in Russia, Mexico, America, France, Britain, etc. as red is often the color of revolution, as well as communism. Maybe this would include the molemen? Relatively weak, and poor, without much funding, but strong, they seek to aid those who have been taken by the plague, and fight the plague, unlike The Empire, which has done nothing to help except leave their people to suffer. They blame Emperor Victor for abandoning his people and for treating them poorly. Though most of what they believe is true, some of the things they heard were twisted before they reached their ears- of course, they're being led by one bright mind who has manipulated himself into a seat of power to really get something more for himself other than just freedom, democracy, and better treatment for the people. But one thing is certain- they are ready to fight The Empire.

-A mysterious empire from the east (The Mighty Dragon Emperor?)- from far across the seas arrives a navy of great steel battleships shaped like dragons, with strange new technological achievements in many things, including warfare. They have already claimed the islands of the minor east, which have recently fallen under the gaze of Emperor Victor, who wishes to claim the islands, and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

-'The Plague' (unknown)- it has consumed almost a third of the empire, turning the people into mindless, but vicious zombies, pawns in the game of a greater being, whom's whereabouts and identity are unknown. It seems as if the plague came out of nowhere. As if... it just happened. The greatest doctors of the time do not recognize the disease, and inspectors can not trace it to a certain place or event.  Thus begins the ultimate battle- on one side is the power of  industry, technology, and human will, and on the other side is the power of a dark magic older than time itself. But the human factions have grown weak, as war takes them, and have payed little attention to the places where the plague has struck ever since the empire shut them off. Will they be able to fight this threat together, or will they fall fighting each other?

Tell me what you think. These are my ideas based off of Bite Me's ideas, and, of course, they can be changed.

I'd prefer another empire to the plague.

I think it would be nice to have the outside world as quite baron, wasteland like, but not an army of zombies (I'm sick of them).

Maybe have the Imperials like those in Eagle and The Radiant Cross (Image by Jan Boruta)...

The_Victory_Parade_by_JanBoruta.jpg

And then maybe the other fraction can be more aristocratic or high class like this... (sketches I did for a mod I planned to make but abandoned)...

pomposity.jpg
pomp.jpg

I realise theres a drawing of George Washington in the top one there but I just liked the uniform and wig.

While the EATRC force would enjoy military flexing to impliment power, the highclass faction would be more flamboyant and for show.

Thoughts?

This is all sounding brilliant. I hope this project goes well!
here is my contribution of suggestions:

1) Play mercinary- not like in regular M&B,  you should be able to go freelance with no allegences at all, do missions for all, assasinations, helping in battles ect ect. only making enemies with indiviual lords, and only making enemies with a faction if you repeatedly do missions against it.

2) Easier to make enemies with lords, and have conciquences. if a Lord hates you enough, he may send hit-squads after you, (even if he is in your faction, but obviusly he has to hate you more)

3) Make the factions very diferent in both visuals and gameplay- and if possible give each faction diferent tactics on the battlefield, for example- one faction may tend to do cavalry skirmishes, then bring in infantry. or another may prefer to hold ground with ranged attacks with a line of infantry for defence.

4) Naval battles have been used in other mods, they would work brilliantly in this, but replacing longboats for massive steam-ships (meybe even in the sky?)

5) GUNS! can be awsome, but can allso be overpowered massively- and can make bows/crossbows useless. allthough with this mod, i assume there wont be any bows.

6) this is a wild suggestion that would be awsome, but is probably impossible-  what if, instead of- or as well as horses, you have steam-machines like in Final Fantasy 6. Big walkers that stand about double as high as a soldier, slow but with a massive amount of health.

7) final one,  a story for each empire, when you join them, you dont automaticaly become a lord. make it so you have to work yourself up through the ranks doing missions- preferably unique missions, not 'collect taxes' ect ect. and once you have become a lord, it would be good to have some interaction with the other factions- make there be a reason for each faction to declare war on each other, so you have some kind of insentive to fight them rather than just being told 'they are the enemy'.

phew, thats all   feel free to ignore as much of that as you like!

EDIT: reading about that army of zombies comming from an ancient evil? - zombies are a tad overdone and get boring quick,  but... what if it was somethink a bit Cthulhu-ish (cant spell it) some dark magical force that no-one knows anything about, and you will never know anything about. just lots of wierd monsters (nothing typical, the wierder the better) and insane cultists,  you can join them by swearing alliegence to them. (like the cultists in the Chthulhu stories/game). oh, and if you betray them, you should realy watch your back

EDIT (again sorry P:smile:-  The 'reds' underground faction sound great, what I think would work best in my opinion would be if they start out with no settlements, or meybe just one or two hidden away somewhere. but make unhappy and poor villages create troops that wander the map like bandits, but only attacking enemies of the Reds.  occasionaly the villages will spawn Lords, who will be able to attack castles and cities, so as the game progresses so will the rebellion.
in whatever the main empires capital will be, you could put a secret Red base, where you can get missions and recruit Red troops if you wish to work for them secretly. it would be awsome if you could do secret missions that gain you freindship for the Reds, but dont make the empire hate you (unless you are caught of course) that way you could be an Empire Lord who secretly supports the resistance

ok first off ive just been diagnosed with tonsolitis and i have a maths exam tomorro, but reading the last few posts has actually raised my mood considerably!!

(to Wanders suggestions) I think you have come up with some brilliant suggestions, i will remodel the map to fit it, although i dont think it will take much work. ( I have a large landmass in one of the corners which could be put to use??
The faction suggestions are very good, although I think the Reds and the Pirates (if possible) could start off being very close friends at the start, then the reds betray them to the empire and ally themselves with the demonic/zombie dudes?
On a note the zombie factions sounds great, although as Qwertyman said Zombies could become boring quite quickly (hence every Zombie game has "bosses" in them to spice it up) maybe it could be a demon faction, kind of like the zombies out of "Left 4 Dead" after a while they become more demon-like and their Lords could be fully demonised< i think I just made a freakin awesome word.

Right now for some ideas of my own

Right now the "new" empire is based on a japanese culture, and it looks like the Main Empire will be german, like in the eagle and the radiant cross.
I suggest that the Pirate faction should be british, preferably scottish (i'm scottish myself) with maybe a few americans, sort of like a western alliance thing.
The underwater faction with Captain Nemo (though maybe not captain, rather low rank) based on an african culture inhabiting the ruins of an older civilisation (like in Age Of Conan- The acheronian ruins)
The reds could be based on an eastern europe culture mix, like poland and russia etc a bit cliched but will still be fun, plus whenever someone thinks red they love to hear the russian accent (<true but slightly unfair)

I agree with everything that Qwertyman has said, although i wish he read the whole post before commenting because a few of his ideas have already been suggested, although i love the mechanised walker thing he said, the fighting machine would definately add some interest to battles, especially if it only had a few very small weakspots.

Although i love the idea of a plague, i think we need to think of it as another faction, though with it still keeping as much plagueniss as possible, maybe like the one out of the second guild wars??

anyhoo post replies please i cant wait to see if we can get this working, only like 5 or 6 days till i put up a recruitment thread and really get this going!!

Oh and Mort are you thinking of the english civil war when you think of military power versus flambouyancy? the roundheads versus the cavaliers sort of style.......... I like .  maybe the empire as the roundheads and the pirates as the cavaliers???

I wouldnt put all your hope on a recruitment thread. I'd learn to mod and do as much yourself as possible.

Bite Me 说:

Nope.

Just seemed like a reasonable idea to have a rich elite that would treat war was something to throw money at, as a toy.
Then you'd have another empire, that would treat war seriously, as a method of gaining power and respect.

The Reds are much like the student rebellion/barricade in the musical Les Miserables. For the most part, they have good intentions- it's their leader that's the problem. Though they are allies with Windtreader's faction, Windtreader is watching their leader (Franz Vladschnof? Idk?), for he suspects that such a brilliant mind must be hiding something much greater beneath the surface. The Reds are mostly a hidden operation. They attack and raid here and there, and then go back into hiding. Their main base is the underground city of Hole, made by the Molemen, and which remains hidden to The Empire, thought of as merely a legend. Their first main goal is to gain freedom from the oppresion that the common man/worker faces from the strict laws and major corporate nesting place of Victor's Empire, in which a large gap exists between rich and poor, the minority being the rich, who are favored by the king and treated as nobles over simple working-class men. Their other goal is to help end the plague, a problem which Victor has done nothing to try and fix. Going into the very heart of the realm of the plague, through secret underground passages, they rescue and care for refugees, while trying to save those diseased who still can be saved, and eliminating those who can not.

I do agree with you on the zombies, they will get boring. They don't all need to look like walking skeletons with pieces of black and purple flesh hanging off their bones, they could be human bodies possessed and completely mutated into a wide variety of monsters.

And I was thinking of The Plague as a faction. It is a faction of it's own. A more minor faction will be 'The Plagued' or 'Refugees', a more innocent faction who are being oprressed by The Plague and it's armies, and need to be rescued before their time is up and they become one of The Plague.

The Victian Empire is probably the first empire you speak of, while the mysterious other empire would be the latter one.

Nope.

I have been doing my own things, I downloaded the map editor and wings 3d and have been trying to use them, but i cannot for the life of me get the module editor to work, its not as if im planning to laze around doing nothing, i just need to know how, which i think is sometimes quite complicated in the forge.

Use the forums' search thingy. Just type in an answer or question, but you probably wanna do a keyword from that question or answer, or a keyword realting to what you wanna know, and it'll come up with a bunch of discussions you can check out that'll probably tell you how you can add this or that into the gam, etc.

Download the brf and item editors and add in the items you like (use search tool for tutorials).

You can use then use the troop editor to edit the factions and troops and equip them.

With a new map, troops/factions and items set up, it's enough to offer as a beta and will demonstrate to people that your dedicated (if people like the look of what your done they'll be keener to hop on board).

These forums are quite harsh on beginners, people usually split off in one of two ways; they either give up and nag others for mods, or they get stronger and keep going.

The more I go out my way to help mods and the community the more people ask of me, it's abit draining and so I apologise if I seem alittle cold. I'd still like to be one of the few that offers their hand to new recruits which is why I've worked so hard on the OSP packs, I want to see as many successful mods and modders as possible.

At the end of the day, it's down to you and though a few people might come forward with some offers, it's you who'll have to make it work.

thats what I have been doing, but i have had no time really, in a few days ill be on it, especially since im ill

Oh and thanks for the heads up Mort, but you dont have to worry, im planning on doing as much of this as i can myself, but i do want other peoples input, since so far they have had just as many good ideas as i have, but i understand what your saying and i will try to make e beta soonish, that means work will start on it in about six days. If anyone likes the idea of this mod and is willing to help, I would be gratefull, I'am not asking for them to do it for me, just to help along like a normal modding team works, there have been plenty good mods done by determined noobs before, although if I end up having to do a beta on my own to show people I mean it then thats fine, I will relish the challenge.
Hope thats answered some questions, keep adding your ideas to this thread!!

Oh and those who have posted artwork, drawings etc, do you mind if I put them on the front page?

Once mine are finished you certainly can. ^^

And certainly get some help from the 1866 modders on how to do cannons- I think they'd be neat. I was thinking that cannons could be a troop.
I am ready to help you with the Beta. I'll be happy to do models, I just gotta get photoshop.

Could I also provide music? I have a bunch of great songs I've picked out- not copyrighted, but free songs off of a website that lets you use its music for free. I've already put together a giant playlist of possible songs that I found on that site...

It would be great to have you Wander, send me a link to the site or show me the songs youve picked, it sounds good

freeplaymusic.com

Okay I threw a bunch away and I'm gonna restart on them- these a few that turned out okay...

Airship Captain- Windtreader? Or should Windtreader be less of the big and burly type and more like Jack Sparrow?

Victian Infantry (Pikemen and Riflemen)- Outfits are probably red or blue, and then with gold or silver- it's up to you...

Victian Heavy Gunner- A steam powered machine gun with six barrels.

More pictures on the way. I know I'm not very good at hands or feet XD. In fact, I'm not good at drawing anything at all. And I wish I had a better scanner, because the shading doesn't show up. I finally got some good sketching supplies so hopefully I can do better shading than just what you get with a crappy scanner and a number two pencil. Tell me what you think...
