Winged Great Helmet

Is this a historical piece of armor?
I've searched but found nothing of the sort among European helmets. Well, there's the Polish winged hussars helmet, but that's totally different.
Seems to me that if there was such a helmet, it would be strictly for parades or other such events.

I thought early Teutonic Ritterbruder used them but im not sure.

Why is the Great Winged Helmet in  the game anyway? It is stronger than a Great Helmet, but it only has wings, that should not add defense in my opinion.

Maybe gives DIVINE protection? ye know god sees the wings and thinks "Hey look wings on a human that must be an angel or somthing better make sure it is well protected"

It gives added protection because of the frigging metal horns.
Overhead attacks? *doink*
Sorry, you hit the horns. Anyways, it's only 2 armour points difference. probably 1 for each horn.

Yeah, it's really likely that somebody is going to hit a sword exactly against the horn, so that it won't hurt the guy who's helmet's thorns those are.

I realize this my friend. Also, thanks for the sarcasm.

There are some ceremonial horned helms (14th century):

I haven't inserted it because it's HUGE (2,892 × 5,844)...

Not sure. That's the media portrayal of them, but then again if we are to trust that then vikings wore horned helmets.
Obviously such helmet would be impractical in combat due to extra weight and drag.

Also notice that a horse gets armor for their entire body (doesn't matter what horse it is) and sometimes horses are running around with javelins stuck in their head without any apparent detriment. This game ain't exactly the realism-express here.

Still, it's a lot of fun.  Just assume the winged great helmet is slightly thicker or give 1 armor to each horn (or something). Either way, it is what it is. You can always use the item editor to change the value if it really bothers you. I ended up doing that with horses... I still get some running around with javelins stuck in their heads, but they die soon after at least.

The only reason I don't wear that thing, even though it has more defense, is that I'm mainly an archer. The horns get in the way of the targeting recticle when I'm playing third person.
Other then that, though, I think it's just for that warlordy look.

I've also heard that early Teutons wore those. In some of my books they are also depicted with wings or horns.

Huh? What Winged Hussar's helmet have to the helm with actual wings?

Maybe, because it looks scary , it adds 2 extra defence points due to the fact that nobody would want to attack something really scary?

I always go with the lordly great helmet because I can't stand the damn wings.

But I put a winged great helmet on all my heroes so they stand out on the battlefield. I think only one or two lords wears a winged great helmet.

There were no faction in the medieval era that used winged great helms, if they did it was for ceremonial purpose or they wanted to scare the opposing army(if you were a foot soldier standing in a vast army and you saw a large amount of knights wearing winged or horned helms you personally wanna run. Anyways overall its a bucket with horns for decoration.

For your average medieval yokel forced to the field to bolster some rich dude's army, a large amounts of knights would be pretty scary even without winged  or horned great helmets.
