Windows Vista and Games

Much of what I have read about Vista suggests it is horrible and will bring the black plague down upon my city if I think of gaming with it, so I need real facts. I trust you guys to know something (bad idea, I know) about Vista and not be biased against it.

I am purchasing a new PC sometime in the near future, and I am going to be using a 64-bit processor, thus would like to take full advantage of said processor. The website I am purchasing from doesn't carry 64-bit XP, and thus if I buy the OS from there as well as the PC, I would have to purchase Windows Vista. Will I or will I not be able to play most games with Vista?

Assuming yes, do I need to get a more expensive version than Home Basic?

64 bit XP is broken iirc. Vista is fine (now) for most games. As with XP, sometiems a certain will just not work for absolutely no apparent reason, but generaly your games will work on Vista. Althoguh there are still problems with games on Vista, usually caused by driver issues or the UAC (User Access Control) from what I've read. Honeslty I'd skip vista and go with the Windows 7 release candidate :p We put the 32 bit version on my roommate's comp (upgraded from Vista) and everything worked faster and a few games even looked better (like WoW), but Windows 7 is still in testing.

Do you think I'll have trouble finding drivers for Windows 7 64-bit drivers?

Actually, I don't know. We were using Vista drivers if we couldn't find Windows 7 drivers and it worked fine. IO have no experience and almost no knowledge of 64 bit.

Although perhaps just sticking to Vista might be safer.

Home Basic is fine (the only real difference is how much inconsequential crap Microsoft have loaded onto it). Haven't had problems with any game under Vista myself, just turn off UAC and keep the OS up to date. Beyond that it's just a case of basic system maintenance, which is the same whether you're running Vista or 95.

AFAIK there's near **** all difference between Windows 7 and Vista. Might be worth waiting to see if you get a free upgrade offer or similar.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the lack of compatibility problems. I can't think of any game I have that doesn't run due to Vista, and I play plenty of games from a few years to ten years old.

Since I've already played most old games and now onto newer games I've had no problems with it other than some compatibillity problems when installing old games again, but most of the time theres a fix for it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I guess I'll go for it.

One final question: How powerful of a video card is powerful enough?

Not really, you'd be fine with 2 gigs of RAM, and that's pretty cheap these days. Video card is definitely what you'll want to spend some cash on, processor too.

For games you want at least 4 gigs.
Vista itself is constantly using up about 1-1.3 gigs of ram, and during games it goes up to 3-4 gigs.

I would highly suggest Vista, EVERY single game has worked for me, except Gothic 2 but that is due to an ATI driver issue.
Vista is what you need for gaming, and Window 7 is not worth it until they release the full version.
And DX10 looks awesome with Crysis.

Um no, no you don't. I've only got 2 GB, and I've yet to see something it can't run perfectly.

Yup, that's why it runs on 512Mb systems

In fact, kernel memory is currently at 187Mb. That's around 80Mb less than XP uses on this box.

It's sad to see that the kids these days have succumbed to a Cult of RAM, when they should really be taking advantage of the fact that RAM is so cheap and plentiful by spending *less* on it.

Do you want me to take a screen shot right now?
It says 1600mb ram are being used up, FOR FIREFOX. With 64bit and with some drivers and maybe 2 small aps running in the background.

Something is wrong with your Firefox then. I have at least 50 tabs open and I'm not using more than 560 mb of RAM. And besides, there's no reason why you have to leave such a big memory hog open when you're playing games. At the very least you could close most of the tabs when gaming, if it's a problem.
