Will the Battanians be balanced?

I heard their wont be any kind of ambush mechanic in the game which was the Battanians selling point. Does this mean they're gonna get stomped cuz i was actually looking forward to a celtic barbarian-esk faction that had a chance for a change. Warband mods have made them far too weak in the past though considering those factions lack of armor it seemed as though it was difficult to find a work around. So a second more general question to tag on to this one is how will unarmored units compete against armored ones?

Where did you hear that?

I've heard from some people on the forums that it was removed because the developers couldn't make it fun for the player. To answer the OP though, there's really no idea. Although from the troop trees I've seen... They don't have archers in their normal tree, they're nobles I guess? We'll really have to see when singleplayer comes out to see how they perform.

wow, did not know that

Callum confirmed the ambush mechanic was removed yeah, but their troops will likely be slightly stronger to find the balance and their territory is also extremely compact making it easy for them to defend all of their settlements. They could definitely be a punching bag in some saves, but hopefully can expand in other ones.

They have stronger archers, and even though it looks like they will have fewer fiefs, they will probably be better defended.

Ambushes sounded like an annoyance to me. If they were included I would want a "no ambushes" mod. Just my personal preference.

They have a small amount of land but their settlements are packed very tightly together, which means most of their vassals will usually be clumped together and nearby to assist in fights. They might have trouble expanding but I dont think theyll be so easy to just demolish. At least I hope not.

They seem to have a bit of Ostrogoth inspiration in their higher tiered units, with more armor and capability.

....So there is no troop deployment option, no ambush mechanics...what's actually better about bannerlord single player experience compared to warband then expect graphics obviously? I'm getting real skeptical here.

I was gonna say this. But I'll add that it could be really tough to take their castles anyway because they specialize mialny in archers, but also have really good infantry. It balances out the cav being horrible, but means they could be OP in sieges and suck in fields.

Isn't troop deployment unlockable with a high enough Tactics skill?

Also I could see "ambushes" working in a short term by letting you shrink your detection radius in forested/rough terrain if you stop moving for a half day. Won't change up the actual battle-map, but would at least provide some sort of variety to the campaign map.

I feel like you have't read up on much of the game development. TW has went out of their way multiple times to express that they never intend to have a troop deployment mode similar to the Total War games, because Bannerlord is fundamentally an RPG.

Yeah, the only thing relating to troop deployment is in sieges, which makes more sense imo.

There was a Gamescom vid that showed off troop deployment before a siege, and in the build from Gamescom 2019 (sept) there was a Level 60 tactics perk that let you"place your troops before all battles. "

Do you have an example of TW expressing that they never intended to include troop deployment?

Edit: here

Yes I've already seen the siege deployment. I'm talking about in battles. In this video Armagan Yavuz describes how the game is fundementally a RPG, and so will have no overview or troop deployment.

It sounds to me like he's talking about an "overview/bird's eye view" mid-battle. It sounds like he's saying once the battle starts you cant see the battlefield from a bird's eye view anymore. Don't get the impression from the context that he's talking about pre-battle formations.

& just thinking about it from a position of game dev, it seems counterintuitive to go through the trouble of creating a deployment mechanic for sieges only to not allow it for pitched battles.

I hope you're wrong, but I suppose we wont know for another 10(!) days

Well it's possible I'm misunderstanding what they said. Even so I wouldn't mind either way, and if the game allows you to do it after a certain level that would be cool.

I should note that the same built had perks for ambushes, which are supposedly out of the game though, so who knows.
