What are your thoughts on Taleworlds possibly making an MMORPG in the near future?  Warband + CRPG in a persistant world with 1 server would be down right awesome...

Best,

Why? So we can turn what we love into a level-based game that is extended by endless grindfests? I understand its appealing to some, but theres a reason I play Warband and not an MMO. Not to disrespect your tastes, just really not my thing.  I also really doubt Taleworlds would make WB a MMORPG. (Considering the time, resources, and money required to make such an endeavor)

Since when did indie studios make successful MMOs? Come to think of it, when did anyone but Blizzard make a successful MMO?

Warband has outstanding gameplay. Wrap that with a persistent world in 1 server with thousands of players, it quiet well could be the most successful MMO ever made. If done right that is, and as for indie game developers not being successful with MMO's I totally disagree, most of them were indie when they started or before the giant EA took over so many of them. Taleworlds has the ability to stay indie and still be very successful. I've been playing MMO's since UO/Asherons call, even through BBS's on a 9300baud modem before we had the internet, and I can honestly say, Taleworlds would make one hell of a great MMORPG based on their core code of M&B.  Just my opinion of course, I am a bit of a dreamer.

It's an extremely bad move financially for a small developer, and would likely spell the end of taleworlds. Do you know how much money it costs to design and maintain an MMO?

Sure. We'll just ask IBM if they've got a spare supercomputer we can run a server on...

No they weren't. Only successful Indie MMO beyond MUDs or browser based like Kingdom of Loathing would be Eve, and that was only indie between S&S and Atari picking them up.

Thousands Millions of complex physics calculations at any given point, wooooo-hooooo.

cRPG with Persistent World? That would require at least two supercomputers just for the Ban Repeal Thread.

It would have to be done right.  It would be so easy to screw up.  I think however, if they went with a seamless persistent world, with M&B/UO/Age of Empires game play elements, it would be very successful.

One of the first things they would have to do though is create a new character customization system.  Simplify it and put in better models.

I've been one of the biggest proponents of seeing this game turned into a MMORPG and I still am.

Just wanna say, your commentary in the video made me laugh.

Anyways, probably not gonna happen within Armagan's lifetime.

+1. Commentary was very funny.

Massive servers are not free, you know... Its, probably, not possible for Taleworlds budget.

BTW, I dont think its needed, there is too much room to improve (both SP & MP) to think in another genre.

I think it's a logical step in the future, an mmorpg based on M&B's combat system in a persistent world.
Would be awsome.

Just please no levels, no gaining artificial skillpoints.
Those elements only detriment a game, as far as I'm concerned.
It should be all about player skill, not artficial levels.

Agreed on this to some extent.  I would like some form of advancement in skills - but limited in scope and capped!  No levels though.

They should also have a liege system in place for people to field loyalty.  Also a means for players to start their own towns, gather taxes, raise NPC troops, and gather resources.  Players would actually have to work together as a team for them to be successful.  Give players many ways to participate in the game.

I think though if Taleworlds really wished to get an MMORPG based on Mount and Blade combat off the ground, they'd have to start simple.    The game world would have to be decent size with many areas for players to start their adventuring from.  This would allow players that wish to start their own kingdom room to do so.  They'd also need to give players basic tools to start, build and maintain holdings(a good guild/kingdom system) would be a must.

NPC troops like in M&B that are trainable or hirable would be necessary to protect players holdings when they are off-line(unless of course the other player/s invading army have overwhelming numbers).  There has to be a way for players to keep and hold all they have worked toward to some extent - so balance would be critical in this part of the game.

There should also be a bounty system in place and a consequences for being a bandit/outlaw player.  I mean sure we'd want some people to play the baddies of the land, but it should be a very harsh existance - but the rewards could be greater.

Also a good tournament system needs to be in place.  So players that wish to travel from town to town and city to city doing tournaments can make names for themselves.

LOL...Taleworlds should just hire me...I'll design them their MMORPG since I all ready have a design paper written up about an MMORPG based off their game.  ^_^

The only affordable way I could see doing something like and MMO, would be make it similar to Guild Wars.  Have one main server (and actually that could even be forum based since game key's are connected to the forum I believe) were you buy your equipment etc. and then have people host there own servers for there own group/party/clan.

This is sort of what cRPG has done, but with just the regular game mode.  What would be interesting is to make something along these lines with the SP part of the game, and then have the cRPG style of experience and equipment.
The main problem would be that the world would have to be pretty big, and probably not have an over world map like they do now in SP.  A possible solution would be to have a map system, were the party leader had a map that would cause the party to travel to different areas.  Example of how an area would work, say the area of Praven, it would be bigger then just the city, that way you could have battles outside of praven, and hunt down bandits etc.

The main problem would be the AI, with merchants and neutral NPC's.
You could actually even make it have a lose story line if you wanted, and perhaps even a story line for each faction.

I do not see how an MMO would be possible with the current technology, although maybe 10-15 years from now they will have the technology to host a server for warband that can hold 1000+ people.  (on that note, the reason why warband would not work MMO style would be due to lag, lag is not AS big of a deal in a game like WoW, since it is not about reaction time, but with warband lag is a major issue).

Hmm, this has just given me an idea for a project...

I am all for an MMO that does not include levels or magical armor etc.

If it was simply Warband on a much larger scale,  that would be awesome and amazing.  Heck I would not even mind the factions vying for power in some multiplayer push system where factions struggle for castles/land etc.  But once you throw in the "my player is better than yours because I play more" it just ruins what this game is all about IMO.

Guild Wars can be considered as a successful MMO.

And the MMOs only started appearing in big quantities recently.

Anyways I never liked the idea of such game type. It can be fun sometimes but you will easily get bored(at least me), the ones that don't get bored, get addicted and some of them actually die.

Blizzard should fall!

Millions?  Look up what a gigahertz stands for.

I would hate to see TaleWorlds invest in an MMO.  If they license the combat engine to someone who wants to make an MMO, sure, but please, TaleWorlds, use your talent for greater good!
