Why won't he give me a castle?

Alright... well in my current game I'm playing the Skilled Hunter, and having a blast. I died once at level 8, but got resurrected at level 10 and haven't died since(I'm now level 21). I was employed as a mercenary captain of the Vaegirs, but pledged my loyalty to the King and have been campaigning with him ever since. So far I have fought in countless battles on his behalf, participated in two military campaigns, helped three sieges by him or his marshal, and captured 4 castles on my own. Well, technically I captured two castles twice, but it's not my fault he doesn't defend them well enough. Anyway, each time I asked for ownership and each time he sent me a letter saying no with 20,000 Denars. Don't get me wrong, the money is a nice gesture, but I still want a castle. What can I do to get him to give me one? I can capture any castle I wish(I figured out a nice strategy for capturing any castle, though sadly it doesn't work on towns. Otherwise I would just renounce my oath and start a kingdom of my own).

I say RENOUNCE! The King is using your magnificent abilites to conquer the World! He knows theres no one able to stop your mighty hunter so he will use and abuse you till you either are dead and gone thus him keeping all he recieved from you OR you leave him for your own kingdom.

Be free brother! Dont become this kings.... well mildly put... his *****

Trust me, if I ever capture a town that is exactly what I'm going to do. But for a castle... not worth it.

I hear ya... I havent renounced my oath yet. Its if and when I can face a town of 300+ and actually stand a chance in winning...300/400 v 150 the odds are not in my fav yet

Then I'd say enjoy the ride and pray he makes you marshall then attack a Town, thus renounce then

In Native (and in most mods I play) the chances of the ruler giving you a fief relies on your Renown. Perhaps you should keep getting yourself involved in big field battles, rake up 1000 or so renown, and then try again?

Yeah. Technically I can capture a castle with 1000 defenders, because of the way it's set up. You start a good distance from the castles, and there are only two very bottlenecked ways in or out. When your army consists of 90% archers and the defenders only have 30% archers, and you can kill 20 enemies per round by yourself, all you need is to be persistent. With towns on the other hand... when the garrison is 5 times larger then your army and the armies start nearly adjacent to each other...  Doesn't work so well.

If you are not tide to any Kingdom, then you can take a castle or town for yourself.  After you have taken whatever you want, go swear loyalty to a King, and you get to keep your towns and castles...

Tweak.  All that is really necessary is to change one number in the scripts.txt file calculate_troop_score_for_center.  It's in MageLords' tweaks for native.  Since I changed that I've not been turned down for a castle.  The number change gives anyone who actually captured the castle/town a better chance to get it.  Original process multiplies you score by 3 and divides by 2.  I changed it so that it multiplies my score by 20 and divides by 2.  Makes sense - up to a point, a king would reward the lord who actually took the castle/town, unless things got really unfair.

I watched Lord Delinard get awarded castles over and over again, and he couldn't hold then if they were chained around his neck.  Perennial loser, perennially rewarded, at my expense.  Fixed that.

Yeah... I might just do that...

Another question: Why don't troops take orders in town sieges? In castle sieges I can hold my archers back and snipe the defends off the walls one by one. In town sieges they refuse to pull back to a safer range and then when the siege tower pulls up the archers head running up the tower to fight hand-to-hand with Swadian Shock Troops.

Another thing you'll find is that AI does a miserable job at garrisoning.  They just sneak a few troops in every now and then, making it easy to take away later.  That is good for us, also, though.  The Khergits took a castle from the Vaegirs, and the Vaegirs are on the verge of taking it back again.  That will be my cue to take it from them, stocking it with Swadian ironclad knights, sharpshooters and shock troops.  Then let's see them take it back!

They will if your not there in the battle. They'll just be counted in some wierd equation, and if theres 100 troops, and you only have like 20 knights, 10 sharpshooters, and shock troopers, they'll win. Unless your actually int he battle when the fighting counts for something.

I'm not talking about a few troops here.  My two castles have over 900 troops each.  From past versions I noticed that if you have about 300 troops, AI might attack but they lose interest after a while.

You can take any castle by yourself?

Then what do you wait for?! RENOUNCE THE OATH! Take over 3 castles and call for 3 vassals. Give 2 of them a castle and keep one for yourself. Wait a few days for them to get 120-130 soldiers each.
Then order them to go with you against a town

I'm currently besieging Veluca with my 3 vassals. We have a total of 550 soldiers vs their 650 soldiers. Actually I lost the first time I tried but I'll keep attacking since I have a fair chance. Having 5 tactics also helps. When I have the chance I'll increase that.

Oh, and after I take Veluca I may actually join a kingdom.

Then they'll take Veluca, and give it to a different lord.

Mininecro, but...

I did it! I took my first city in all of M&B history! Suno is mine! It started with me taking Estroq Castle by Velucia, though I had to make peace with the Rhodoks after that because Graveth brought the entire Rhodok army down upon my tiny castle. After that I took Ryblet Castle by Suno.(I know I butchered the spelling there, but whatever). Ran into a bit of difficulty at that point. Not so much capturing another castle, but actually finding a suitable target. See, Swadia was the only faction I had a negative relationship with at that point, and I wanted to keep it that way. However, Swadia was also at war with every other faction in the game, so their castles were disappearing fast. Eventually they managed to take the Szukishalwhatever Castle back from the Rhodoks, which I immediately beiseged and took from them. Then I gave land to my lords, let them get an army, and marched on Suno.

As me and my two lords were headed toward Suno, forming a nice sized army of 450, something happened. "Suno has been besieged by the Nords" ...crap... I took a look, and Ragnar brought the entire nordic army against Suno. It was 850 versus 350... Knowing that the Nords were going to capture Suno, I decided I would take it from them as soon as they took it from the Swadians. So I went on a wild bandit/tribe/fallen hunt while the siege was happening after five days later, I see the message "Suno is no longer under siege". I'm not too far, so I head over and find to my amazement... the Nords lost. They outnumbered the enemy almost 3 to 1, and they lost. Suno still had 250 defenders left as well, 200 of which were in fighting condition. So... I besieged the town with my lords following, and after two assaults liberated it from the Swadians. Wohoo!

I was crashed like a bug on the walls of Veluca. Both me and my 4 vassal lords. Playing with 250 men on map is a messy thing.

I tried to take Praven yesterday with 250 elite troops but it proved too much for me to handle. I'm with the Nords and we're at war with Rhodok and Swadia. We captured every single one of the enemy castles but castles are not the problem.

The problem is that the Nords don't seem to be fond of besieging towns and none of the lords wishes to "follow me when i have an idea"(btw is there a use for this dialog option?it never works).

The thing is i 'm running around with 250 elite troops defending the castles, and another 200(150 elite)garrisoned at my own castle, having suicidal tendencies due to boredom. Is there a way to make Nord lords follow me so that we assault cities or should i do ti solo(is it possible?).

How do you beat enemy factions?

I'm thinking of renouncing the oath but i like the Nords. Are they going to wage war against me afterwards?

i read in another post that when you start your own kingdom, a vassal may desert at some point, taking with him the troops you gave him. This sucks but is it true? And it's only troops he takes or the castle you gave him too?

You had 250 elite troops and couldn't take Praven? What elite troops were you using?
How many defenders were in there?

Last time I played Nords once I got around 30 warlords & the rest (70 or so) berserkers & huscarls NOTHING could stop me.
I was regularly taking towns with 500+ garrisons with only 100 or so troops, and with minimal casualties.

ok my bad.My troops were not all elite and approximately 800  troops were garrisoned at Praven, which is mine now along with Suno, and Ukhal(?) .

And lord Gnudarr follows me now and i think this is because we have friendly relation.

But the king although he is reported as my friend too, won't give me castles(except the first one of) or conquered towns and i have over 1000 renown and captured most of them!

bah... me thinks the time approaches when i slaughter them all

Edit:i guess i'm impatient after all...the king gave me Dhirim and the Swadians are dead and gone!
