Why does everyone think this is the end?

Because the whole point of going 1.0 and having a retail release is to be done with the game. There may come patches to fix minor issues, they may even change some few things, but all in all the point of 1.0 is to be finished. There won't be any groundbreaking gameplay changes hereafter.

I honestly wouldn't expect much more than bugfixes, with one exception. Armagan mentioned in an interview not too long back that he would include the ability to design your own banner in-game in a patch after 1.0.

And the beginning of time to play lot's of M&B so what are you sad about? 

If you are worried, look at Oblivion. Official company hasn't touched it with a 10 foot pole but the modding community has taken over. I'm already looking forward to the LoTR mod, and I am sure with 1.0 a lot of modders will come out of the closet to work on their project since they won't have to worry about major updates.

I almost see it as a symbolic passing of the baton from Taleworlds team to the modding community. And a job well done, Taleworlds

I see Mount & Blade as something like Neverwinter Nights;

The game developers have made the game, and it's been published. They'll happily put up a few patches for problems that crop up, and there may occasional new content, but there's such a strong community of modders creating their own additions to the game -- at a far greater rate than Armagan could churn out -- that unless he's going for something that really shines, it just wouldn't be worth it for him to put all his effort into it. He can easily keep an eye on M&B while working on other projects (which he may or may not have already in mind -- I do not know).

I think Mount&Blade as a franchise has a great future ahead of it. We already know that there will be a second iteration, and if that works out there's bound to be something more.

Hope you are right, I think having the community input has made this game what it is today, plus, they got some good employee's from the modding community

Armagan and co. move on to work on M&B2. The "completion" of M&B1 is now in the hands of a very able modding community.

Well, he may even decide to work on an expansion, as there's still plenty of areas and content that could be added to the game. Anyway, any sequel will be a long way down the road, as it's taken 4 or so years for this one.
