Why do the troops do this?

Everytime I start a battle, my troops rush forward. Is there a way of stoping them do this, other than having to instantly hold the f1 key and pressing on a close ground?
Pressing f1 doesnt always work well, because sometimes they rush, get in front of me, and I cant seem to see where the f1 banner is.
Another thing is that sometimes when I start moving them around after pressing f1, they get clustered and so they have diffuculty moving around.

Press F1-F1 to stand ground just as the start. Or, if you dont want them making the big line, do F1-F2, so they will follow you.

Its advisable you do F3-F2 too, so they will hold fire and wont do strange things on the start.
