Why do Regiments have letters after their number?

As the tittle says, I seem some regiments with e next to their number or y, etc.

For example: 36e or 77y.

But yes, the letters after the numbers simply correspond to each language's numbering.
For example in English we have: second giving us 2nd. In French that would be: deuxième, thus 2e.

However, the Brits are a bit special, what with their: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and then all the th's
