Why do people get piercings/tattoos?

Hair grows back. People like tattoos/piercings. Why do you even ask? A similar question; why do people drink whatever they drink and not something else? It's a nonsense question.

Haircuts are necessary.
Tattoos and piercings are a choice. Sure it hurts for a short time, but if it makes you happy, then you won't care. Its hardly mutilation.

Besides, pain is a pretty rubbish reason no to do something
"Honey, lets have a baby!"
"**** that, it hurts"

Babies are necessary, and can be a load of fun until they start being sick, and crying, and ****ting and screaming...
What if everyone suddenly decided not to have them because it hurts?
