Why can't I jump into certain fights?

So what if I am not at war with one of the combanants, why is the only option "Dont get involved"?

What if I *WANT* to get involved?  Why cant I play both sides of the fence?

And this doesn't even only apply to the kingdoms, I have tried to get in the middle of fights between Outlaws/Deserters/Sea Raiders but  that never works either

I want more flexibility, dangit!!!

Your allegiance with certain factions will make sure that you can join certain battles.
But the bad thing that would occur is that you'll end up fighting against every faction on the map,
and that would end up bad for you and your troops.

Yes, i understand that.  My question is, why?  Why is the game protecting me from myself?

And is there anyway to change this phony restriction?

That's a good question, there's probably a tweak you can perform in the module system.  Check Magelords tweaks, or ask in the forge.

You can attack any faction you want as long as your relatoinship with that faction is less than zero.  ATtack some peasants or raid some caravans.  You can't attack lords of your own faction

Not while they are in battle with someone else.  Try it sometime. If you are not at war with either one, your only option is "Dont get involved"

I agree with the suggestion; this is something that has always bothered me. Some mods do address the issue, but I'd love to see the Native game increase its flexibility as well.

Too funny to read

Actually, I suspect it's because Mount & Blade's battle AI can't handle a three-way conflict.

I mean, look at the way the arenas and tournaments work. Arenas are meant to be free-for-alls but you'll often see three or more NPCs working together against the player. Tournament battles have up to four teams, but the multitude of targets means the AI just scatters more, and again you can see 'enemies' working together at times.

Now put this in the context of a large battle - let's say two lords with about a hundred soldiers each, and the player intervenes with another eighty. What's going to happen to the NPC armies? They're going to get scattered and confused, fighting amongst each other and against the player army. It would be even easier than usual for the player to come out with a stunning victory - you would only have to keep your army clustered together on a hill while the AI armies wear each other out. Any forces which head your way will be greatly outnumbered and swiftly dealt with, and in the end you could just mop up any survivors.

Or, you'll see the vengeful enemies suddenly and strangely unite and attack you en masse, completely ignoring the major war raging between the two of them to deal with an interloper who is ... daring to watch them fight.

Of course, this is all just speculation based AI behaviour in the arena and tournaments. Has anyone actually had a three-way field battle using a tweaked file, and how did it play out?
