Why are people in universities taller?

Graduate as in get bachelor's thesis? Very possible at least in Finland if you postpone the mandatory military service or are exempt from it (you are female or relatively sick/overweight).

More blimey because I'm 21 and kinda won't even start a course (at 'university of applied science' or hogeschool level) until the start of next school-year.

Junk food does tend to form a large proportion of the diet in lower-income families, so I wouldn't rule that out just yet.

Yeah, that's not really true. Lower classes have to rely on cheap food, in the states that's big bags of rice, bread, Ramen. Cheap pot-roast and so on.
That's not really true either.  If people can't afford the good junk food then they would buy the cheaper off-brand junk food.

Every single tall person (as tall as I or taller) I know is pretty smart.

But I'm tiny. I am only 0.4 ilexes tall! You, on the other hand, are 1.6 Llandys tall! I might not be as smrt as you, but I like to think that I at least am more than 0.4 of your intelligence!

I wasn't saying anything about intelligence of  hobbits, just that out of my sample of tall people all are smart.

How did you get the figure for women at your school being four inches above average? If it's self reported or sampled I would be skeptical. When I was in school, I don't remember anyone recording people's height. I don't know how you would get an accurate figure like that unless everyone is required to get their medical checkup at the school.

Now I could certainly see a sample giving the impression of college students being taller. Whenever I went to bars or clubs in college, people were usually significantly taller there. And it's true taller people have more confidence making things like going to college more likely. So if it were a sample of student height taken at say, a sorority, then I could see the number being higher. I'd guess taller people are more social. But four inches higher for an entire school sounds unusually high.

You'll find wealthier families rely just as much on junk food for expediency. Due to both parents usually having jobs and the kids having a million and one after school activities they need to be rushed too. Also, coming from a lower income family early in my youth, we actually didn't eat junk food nearly at all. We had to rely on cheaper fresh foods, which turn out to be healthier, gasp!

Anecdotal evidence of exceptions really doesn't mean much, not unless your family is large enough to make a significant blip in the average sample size for a study.

Middle classes can afford to get the 'cool' food which is largely junk, go to fast food places all the time and generally just pig out. Meals will often consist of frozen food that's been popped in the microwave.

Oh and McDonalds.

Don't tell me, tell the people eating that food and the people funding the research.

If it's UNM, NMT or NMSU, I would think that the height discrepancy is due to a higher number of Germanic whites and Hispanics on campus who can claim actual European heritage, mixed or direct. Europeans, at least according to Wikipedia, are taller on average than Americans and Mexicans. And I think you're confusing the Mexican and Spanish populations of the state.

Cause I'd expect someone from the NY Times to know how to look for deals on food and where to shop.

That's a load of bull****, and you don't know any better because you're probably from an upper middle class family.

Practical experience tells me that I can get a weeks worth of lunches at the local deli in cold cuts, bread, and veggies for the same price as four microwave meals or a couple bigmac meals. I also know that I can get several lbs of pasta for a couple bucks, and I can make my own gravy for real cheap. Hell, I know where to get these hand made breakfast rolls which are like a meat and vegetable stuffed ciabata roll, and they're a buck a pop. The point is, if you're poor, you know where to go.

I know a lot of people who claim to be "Spanish", but they're a little over five feet tall and darker than most natives. It's kinda funny. I'm not confusing anyone, because I'm not looking at just one ethnic group. I'm taking a random group from UNM, finding they're on average about 5'10", and comparing that to the state's average height, which is 5'8". There is about 42-43% of the population which is Mexican, which is why this state is an inch or two below other states. I did used to go to NMT, and you're right about the Germanics there, there's a ton for some reason, but I'm talking about UNM right now, which is mostly instate students and represents New Mexico's demographic pretty well.

Yes, and how much more empty calories can you get for the same amount of money you spend on your food? Not everyone poor is able to make the choices that you do, if they did they wouldn't be having diet problems.

I may not be a dietitian, but I strongly suspect that you get more "empty calories" from junk food, than from pasta, fresh cold cut meats and cheese, and vegetables. Also, only people I know of having diet problems around here are middle class people with weight problems from eating fatty, high calorie junk food.

Either way, there's plenty of poor people in this university, mostly due to a state scholarship that pays for four years of tuition and the only requirement is that you graduate from a NM high school and maintain a 2.5 GPA, and the school being very inexpensive to begin with.

So, I wanna hear some responses from you, but I've found people who attend universities tend to be a few inches above the average. For instance, average height of women at my university is four inches over that of the state, and men range around two inches taller than the state average. I've heard the argument before that people tend to associate height with intelligence, so tall people will be pushed and given the resources more often to complete a post secondary education.
It's probably like this:
People who go to university are not unusually comparatively wealthy, and people who are comparatively wealthy are usually well fed, and people who ahve been well fed during their critical growth phases usually grow larger. But of course this is dependent upon how plutocratic the respective state/society is.

Oh, and I said well-fed, not just much-fed.

If it isn't that it'sprobably just mere chance or selective percception. At least I can't think of any other reasonable theories.

It seems you didn't really read the last couple pages of discussion on diet. Really, I don't know why people consider it to be such a large factor so quickly. Back in the middle ages, you saw a slight difference between nobility and commoners because there was a huge difference in diet. There isn't that huge difference any more, at least not in developed countries. I see this issue of being more sociological than biological.

Maybe the people at university just generally got more exercise during their major growing periods.

They're less good at being stowed away, smuggled, thrown, being short, hiding, disguising as a single tall person together for zany antics and at being short.

So I guess by that philosophy black people are much better at picking cotton, selling each other into slavery, and trying to avoid work?

To whoever reads this, please note I'm kidding.
