I think you've probably asked the wrong question. You're asking people to tell you what the most 'famous' mod is. When they reply with mods that are well known on the forums, you come back with personal opinions of which mod you like, which isn't the question.
TLD and Band of Warriors are very well known mods, as is EG 2. If you want to pick fault with replies or make comments about mods, then I'd suggest you ask something like 'Which mod is your favourite?', although that has been asked many, many times, so I wouldn't advise starting a new thread on it.
The most famous mod is most definitly "The Last Days" mod, because 1: It is well made, and 2: it is based on a well-known and fairly popular topic.

Last Days definetly...actually the first mod I played cuz of all the buzz...now I'm waiting anctiously for new version to be ported and release of Wold West mod.

Band of Warriors used to have about 55,000 downloads, but I guess they replaced that entry when releasing a new version.
TLD is the most famous, for obvious reasons.

Obviously Janus' Arena mod is the most famous, as much of that mod is now a part of M&B itself. Also, remember that lil' ol' mod by nijis ... Battle for Sicily. Much of that mod's concepts are now in M&B itself.
I think that when a new version is uploaded and not replaced over the current upload, the stats don't carry over. Also, you'd have to tally up Extra NPC mod uploaded by fisheye, Band of Warriors for 0.808 uploaded by me and then fisheye, BoW for 0.894 & 0.90x uploaded by fisheye, and the latest uploaded by NCrawler [/shameless plug]
