So I understand the Nords are norse, like Vikings.

The Khanate seem to resemble Mongols.

The Swadians remind me of what I'd imagine most French, English, etc the more civilized medieval cultures would be

What are the rhodoks?  Vaegirs?  And i think im forgetting one

Rhodoks are the great unknown. I figured that they were based on Greeks some time ago, simply down to the shape of their name. Then again they've got a kind of Caucus Hill-Tribes feel to them. We'll have to wait for more work to be done on them, methinks.

I'm not too sure. I kind of like the idea of a spear and xbow-based equaphobe(?) faction.

Swadians - Based on medieval Western European knight-dominated cultures (Germans, French, Spanish, etc.).
Vaegirs - Based on Slavic cultures (Poles, Rus, etc.).
Nords - Based on Scandinavian cultures.
Khergits - Amalgamation of Turkish/Mongol/Persian cultural influences.
Rhodoks - What's left over; just a silly little country thrown in for laughs.

For some reason, I visualize the Rhodoks with a Bizantine culture. Plus, Rhodoks reminds me of Rodos, which is a greek island or something.

I think the Vaegirs are vaguely Turkish.
rus were influenced by turkics around them in medieval period. if vaegirs were horse archers, i would agree that they are turks, but they are not.

Rhodes?

Byzantines/Greeks/Eastern Romans were heavily into cavalry/cataphracts, which Rhodocks can ribbonize but don't employ.  They're just particularly good anti-cavalry.  Maybe something in the soil makes their horses sterile?

Rhodock are not complete yet, I think

If the swadian are english, then rhodock would be french

I think the *real* Mongol will be returning soon: the black kherjits
The *normal* Kherjits are more like tartars or huns ? just guessing

The Vaegir look an awfull lot like normans with the new uniform, studded leather & viking helm
but then so do the nords (haubegeon + viking helm)

Perhaps

Vaegir = Normans
Nords- Sweden
Sea Raiders = Iceland (far north vikings, more savage)

I don't think there is a direct match

But there was a lot of effort to personalize them

Vargir were improved a lot in the .894 release
Before that they were easy to confuse with Kherjit
because they both wore lamelar

I suspect the nations are mostly made up from the designers' fancy (rather than sticking with the French and English and so forth like purely historical games do), with some bits from one nation and some from another. Some are clearly of a particular ethnicity, but others aren't.

Unfortunately, the Rhodok crossbows regularly suffer from the Red Ring of Death, causing them to cry Tears of War.

I concur

I think it's more related to balance than to real world resemblances.

Something like:
-Swadians: all slow but powerful units. Highly armored knights and long-ranged crossbowmen, mixed with decent infantry.
-Vaegirs: overally good faction with a very balanced mix of nice cavalry and skirmishers, adequate infantry and quite armored archers.
-Khergit: very fast units. Great archers and cavalry, both knights and skirmisher with weak infantry
-Nords: godly powerful multi-purpose infantry, with great damage and armor and missile capabilities, but lacking cavalry and dedicated archers/xbowmen.
-Rhodoks: an incomplete faction that was threw on the last minute. Something like "let's see if spearmen can be used as a separate infantry type", and then some xbowmen to give this faction something else to fight with.

The Rhodoks are indeed an incomplete faction based loosely on the Atlanteans.  Armagan has not yet implemented the Rhodoks' powers of controlling marine creatures and calling down the wrath of Poseidon.

That's right. Armagan said that in the next version the rhodok's spears will be replaced with tridents and their cavalry will ride walruses. Their ranged units will have spearguns and their highest tier units will be mermen. the mountain range to the south will be replaced with another ocean and they will have cities under the sea

Under the sea...
Under the sea.
There'll be no accusations,
Just friendly crustaceans -
Under the sea!

I don't know... The Rhodoks remind me of Scots for some reason. Maybe it's their national dress or maybe because a whole bunch of them have spears and always take down a few of my riders before I can mow them down properly. You know, like that scene in Braveheart.  However, I don't think the Scots were famous for using crossbows...
