I disagree on this, it is meant the cradle of today's Western civilization. Ideas and what not that today's Western world has adopted from Greeks.

My point is that Europe is culturally divided into more than just two parts. There is at least West proper, the Mediterranean, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. These cultural (sub)regions don't always strictly respect geography and sometimes not even state borders - e.g. parts of France are in West proper and parts are in the Mediterranean. Greece is hands down in the Mediterranean and so is Croatia despite having been under (Austro-)Hungarian rule for ages

Good example is Croatia you mentioned with Austrian influence. It practically has nothing with Western culture except from buildings and other stuff. Language, history(before Austria) and some other things just put them to the East.

Eastern Europe is part of today's Western civilization. Eastern Europe (whatever it is) is definitely not a civilization in its own right. It's a derivative of the Greco-Roman world just like Western Europe.

Plus the saying has been around forever. Applying the Cold War terminology on it doesn't make sense.
