When you rebalance leveling speed, use Riding/Bow as your benchmark, not Athletics.

I'm glad Khuzait Horse Archer cheesers like us (who got used to steamrolling the map with no troop losses) aren't the people the game is balanced around. In my experience the leveling of Medicine is more or less alright (at least compared to others). Try simulating more (maybe all) of your battles (so you actually take losses just like the AI). There are other graver offenders.
No other skill basically asks you to play badly (party wiping often) in order to get a decent leveling speed.

Personally I don't understand why they are even trying to balance these things right now. No one will be playing Native once the game stabilizes and releases. Instead the vast majority of people will be playing a modded experience and will be modifying the leveling rates to the progression rates they prefer anyway.

1: They're not balancing them, so where're getting more and more grumpy about it.
2: There won't be a stable full version for a long long time and we want to test the beta, but we want to also enjoy the game with good character development! What if we all boycott the beta and just play a modded standard..... with nobody reporting bugs then they will end up porting a buncha bugs into the stable and **** it for everyone anyways. I think it already happened once where the stable version got some woopsy-poopsy into it because we were slacking off on playing the beta (yes it's out fault for not playing the beta we payed for EA to play! )

Developers are aware of this issue and will be working on it, of course. I've also forwarded this specific thread for further clarification.

Riding skills progression is good because you are doing it all the time, if you ride across world map on foot you will increase your athletic skills, not so fast I think, but it's obvious, if we spend so much time doing a particular and ordinary thing, we will be good on it, if you trade all the time you will reach the highest trade level, or if you spend the entire game in a forge, you will be a great blacksmith, and your riding level will be a misery But the balanced player will never reach the highest values of anything besides those that are naturally common due to the essence of the game.
